Nicholas Mehaffy

28-year-old Nicholas Mehaffy was stopped for no license plate light. When police made contact with Mehaay they saw a rifle on the seat next to the suspect and asked him to exit the vehicle. Mehaffy agreed to let officer pat him down to ensure he had no other weapons on him. During that search, an officer located a blue container with suspected meth residue, 12 prescription Vicodin pills and 3.7 grams of meth.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspect told police that the drugs were his and admitted to using meth and taking two of the Vicodin. An officer with Drug Abuse Recognition was summoned to the scene to assess Mehaffy. The suspect did have a nonprofessional permit to carry firearms from the state of Iowa, however, his being under the influence rendered the permit invalid under state law.

Mehaffy was given field tests to determine if he was under the influence of drugs and failed the field tests. He has been charged with second-offense OWI, carrying weapons, possession of meth and possession of prescription medications. He was transported to the Des Moines County Jail where he is being held on bond.
