Obituaries for Wednesday December 12th

Marjorie L. Mellinger, 90, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care Center.
Born April 24, 1928 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Frank Lee and Helen Louise (Burgess) Walker. She married Elwood Mellinger in October of 1948. He died April 29, 1977.
Marjorie graduated from Burlington High School and Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught in a one room school house, worked at Sylvania and was the librarian for the Mediapolis High School before she retired.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mediapolis. Her pastimes included camping, reading, and knitting.
Survivors include two sons, Dwight (Mary) Mellinger of Burlington and Duane (Jeanne) Mellinger of Port Aransas, TX; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one brother, Robert Walker of Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, and two sisters.
The graveside service and interment for Mrs. Mellinger will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 14, 2018 at Kossuth Cemetery. Rev. Dan Baker will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice in Marjorie’s memory.

Sten R. Hoffer, age 98, of Stronghurst, Illinois, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born April 27, 1920 in Helsingborg, Sweden, the son of Zander and Hilda Akerman Hoffer. On August 20, 1956, he married Dolores Issacson in Monmouth, Illinois.

Mr. Hoffer attended schools in Sweden. He served in the Swedish Army Cavalry during World War II, protecting the Swedish border. He immigrated to the United States in 1948 and became a U.S. citizen on May 17, 1955. He lived in Monmouth, Illinois until 1965, when he moved to Stronghurst. He was employed at C.E. Neff Company in Stronghurst for 41 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Stronghurst and the Stronghurst Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores of Stronghurst, 2, nieces, 2 nephews, 5 great nieces, 5 great nephews, and one cousin, all of Sweden. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Curt Hoffer, one sister, Ing-Gunnell Nolberger, and one sister in law.

Friends may call from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Stronghurst. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Banks & Beals with Rev. David Vidler officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at tne funeral home. Burial will be in Monmouth Cemetery. Brett Alan Hill, 55, of rural Danville, formerly of Burlington, died at 10:32 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Great River Hospice.

Born April 1, 1963 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Robert and Bonnie (Goodwin) Hill. He married Cynthia McAllister on July 1, 2005 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

Brett graduated from BHS and achieved his Automotive- Diesel Truck Technology Mechanic certification at Lincoln Technical Institute in Des Moines. During high school he was employed with Hill’s Conoco Station. He worked at Ruan as a diesel mechanic and in the maintenance department at Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Mt. Pleasant. Brett became a professional Pressman while working for The Hawkeye Newspaper. He was a member of the Graphic Communications International Union.

Mr. Hill was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ. As a youth, he was a member of the scouts. He loved animals and was a member of the National Wildlife Federation. Brett was the campaign chairman for the American Diabetes Association annual drive in his neighborhood. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hunting deer, squirrels, turkey, and mushrooms. Brett enjoyed riding his Harley, repairing and restoring cars with family and friends. Brett loved watching NASCAR, attending concerts, and helping others. His grandchildren all held a special place in his heart, he was honored to act as grandfather to many other children.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia, a daughter, Ashley (Mark Stolze) Carr of Ankeny, IA; bonus daughter, Barbara (Ellis) Codjoe of Ottumwa, IA; bonus son, Anthony (Sara) Barrett of Plumas Lake, CA; grandchildren Kirra, Eva, Aria, Jacob, Matthew, RieLynn and Madison; his parents of Terlingua, TX; sister, Katrina Harvey of Fargo ND; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; two brothers, David Troy and Clint Robert; and sister, Dianne Kathleen.

The Celebration of Life Service for Brett Hill will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday December 15th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Deb Kinney will officiate. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 14, 2018 at Lunning Chapel. Cremation will be accorded after the service.

A memorial has been established in memory of Brett.
