Tornadoes Touch Down Friday

After surveying the damage on Saturday, The National Weather Service has confirmed the tornado in Johnson County was an E F-1 with winds up to 110 miles per hour.

In their assessment, they discovered damage to rooftops and trees, and some outbuildings and mobile homes were flipped.

Frytown, a village of about 200 that sits roughly 10 miles south of Iowa City, saw the brunt of the damage, with several trailers at a mobile home park there overturned.

Still no injuries have been reported.

 

Tornadoes touched down on Friday, first in McDonough County then later in the evening in Johnson County.

In McDonough County around 12:30 Friday afternoon, two tornadoes touched down leaving paths of debris across several miles and packed winds of about 110 miles per hour according to the National Weather Service.

While there was damage to some structures along with trees and power lines being knocked down, there have been no reports of injuries.

Later in the evening, around 7:00, a tornado touched down in Johnson County, near Iowa City. This twister damaged homes and interrupted the graduation ceremony of West High School, sending graduates and families into the tunnels under the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

There have been no reports of injuries on this storm as well.

The National Weather Service is still assessing the damage to both areas and will give updates as they become available.
