According to a new study out of the University of Iowa, playing Minecraft can help increase creativity.

Researchers with the University of Iowa did an experiment to see how playing Minecraft impacted the participants creativity. The researchers described as ‘virtual legos’.

For the experiment, researchers had two groups play Minecraft, a third group played a Nascar Game, and a fourth group watched TV. Both Minecraft groups were told how to play the game and a one of the Minecraft groups was instructed to be as creative as possible

Not only did they participants playing Minecraft end up being more creative, the participants who weren’t told to be creative ended up being more creative than those were instructed to be creative.

Researchers concluded that telling participants to be creative actually resulted in less creativity.
