Sharkey Pleads Not Guilty

Burlington, Ia (The Hawk Eye)-  The man accused of shooting at a group of people near Big Muddy’s in Burlington pleaded not guilty Monday in a written arraignment.

The Hawk Eye reports that 24-year-old Chad Allen Sharkey of Stronghurst, Illinois, has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of willful injury causing serious injury, one county of willful injury causing bodily injury and one count of intimidation with a firearm with the intent to injure or provoke.

According to the Burlington Police Department, Sharkey shot his gun Sept. 4 at a group of individuals who were in the parking lot outside of Big Muddy’s. Sharkey allegedly injured three people, Blain Burford, David Degen, and Tyler Bessie. Burford and Degen both required medical attention.

Sharkey is facing up to 25 years in prison for attempted murder, 10 years on each count for two counts of willful injury causing serious injury and intimidation with a firearm with the intent to injure or provoke and 5 years for willful injury causing bodily injury.

In addition to the prison time, Sharkey could face a total fine of up to $37,500. A court date for Sharkey has not yet been set.
