Susan Marie Brockway, 67, of Burlington, passed away at 9:50 PM Sunday, October 20, 2019, at her home.

Born January 24, 1952, in Iowa, she was the daughter of Robert Cliffton and Margaret Mary Geren. On May 8, 1971, she married Stephen Ray Brockway in Burlington.

Susan worked health care at St. Francis, Burlington Care Center, Kleins and Home Health Care before she retired.

She graduated from Notre Dame in 1970.

Susan was a member of Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, riding horses, watching Iowa football and the Chicago Bears. Susan loved to go on bus trips, motorcycle trips and vacationing in Biloxi, MS.

Survivors include her beloved husband; daughter, Jennifer Brockway of Rock Island, Illinois; two grandchildren; one brother, Dan Geren of Burlington; two sisters, Sandy Stockman of Murphy, NC and Janice of Stone Mountain, GA and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

A celebration of life will be held from 12:00 PM-4:00 PM on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the Beat Tavern in Burlington.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Daniel Joseph Newberry, 64, of Burlington, died at 7:15 AM Sunday, October 20, 2019, in Burlington.

Born November 20, 1954, in Burlington, he was the son of Frank E. and Mary M. Newberry. On April 23, 1977, he married Pamela K. Duke at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Burlington.

He worked for CNH for 30 years before retiring. After retirement, he worked in food service for the Burlington Community School System.

He attended both Burlington Notre Dame and Burlington High School, graduating in 1974.

Dan was of Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, attending at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. He loved boating on the Mississippi, golfing and wood working. He also enjoyed the Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and spending time with his grandsons, family and friends. Dan refereed basketball and belonged to the Iowa SE Officials Association and Iowa Girls High School Association. Dan was an organ donor and his corneas have been accepted by the Iowa Lions Eye Bank.

Survivors include wife, Pam of Burlington; daughter, Rebecca (Jeff) Freeman of Davenport; two sons, Matthew (Andrea) Newberry of Waukee and Peter (Brittany) Newberry of Des Moines; four grandsons: Sam and Benji Freeman of Davenport, and Winston and Vaughn Newberry of Waukee; two sisters, Nancy (Paul) Hertel and Jeanne Ertz both of Burlington; three brothers, John (Cindy) Newberry of New London, Tom (Pam) Newberry of Burlington, and Frank (Lori) Newberry of West Burlington; and a boatload of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Newberry, brothers-in-law, Mark Kohorst and Andy Ertz and maternal and paternal grandparents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Newberry will be 10:00 AM Thursday, October 24, 2019, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.

Jerry Walden, 56, of Burlington, passed away at 1:51 PM Sunday, October 20, 2019, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 14, 1963, in Waterloo, he was the son of John and Sharon Strawn Walden.

Jerry worked as a Boilermaker at Union Hall in Kansas City for 25 years before retiring.

He graduated Burlington High School in 1981. Then he attended Indian Hills Community College where he received his Laser Technology Degree. Jerry also completed Boilermaker Apprentice School.

Jerry enjoyed reading, listening to music, playing games on his tablet, and always being right.

Survivors include his parents; one sister, Edith (Anthony) Kastantin of Burlington; two nephews, Stephen and Brad Kastantin; his godparents, Sally Kelly and Jake Blitsch; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Jerry will be 10:00 AM Friday, October 25, 2019, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Burlington Golf Club following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
