Obituaries for Thursday December 5th

Gertrude Marie Stevens, 101, of Burlington, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Oak View Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born May 26, 1918 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of John Christ and Dora (Miller) Mewes. She married Glenn Stevens on March 7, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri. He died August 11, 1971.
Gertrude worked as the office secretary for the Teamsters Union Local #218 for 20 years until her retirement on February 28, 1982.
She was a member of St. Luke United Church of Christ and Teamsters Local Union #218. She more recently attended Oakville Community Church.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, crafting, going out to eat with her family, listening to Big Band music and admiring classic cars.
Survivors include her two children; Dennis (Bonnie) Stevens and Linda (Jim) Anderson both of Burlington; five grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and three sisters.
The Celebration of Life for Mrs. Stevens will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 10th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev Jim Ruberg and Rev. Steven Parker will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Oakville Community Church.

Catherine Sue Hawley, 62, of Mediapolis, died Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Great River Medical Center.
Born May 4, 1957 in Illinois she was the daughter of Kenneth Johnson and Gloria Coronell. She married Jesse “Monte” Hawley on June 27, 1992.
She graduated from Wapello High School, and earned her A.A. degree from Kirkwood Community College.
Catherine worked in various positions throughout her life. She was of the Catholic faith.
She enjoyed sewing, crafting, and gardening. She loved animals, her two cats and her dog.
Survivors include her husband Monte Hawley of Mediapolis; one daughter Monica (Matt) Eisenmann of Burlington; one step-daughter Angie (Bert) Murphy of Wellman, Iowa; six grandchildren, Madelaine Eisenmann, Lydia Eisenmann, Ethan Eisenmann, Naomi Eisenmann, Ashley Bontrager and Matthew Rich; one brother Kenneth “Wayne” Johnson of Ohio; two sisters, Cris (Bill) Ramsey of West Burlington and Dory (Mike) Mann of New London, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Kevin Wakeland.
The celebration of life visitation for Catherine will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 6th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
A memorial has been established for the Mediapolis Ambulance Service.
According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

Mildred M. Smith, 87, of Muscatine, formerly of Burlington, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at the Lutheran Living Senior Campus in Muscatine.
Born June 21, 1932 in Greenville, Mississippi she was the daughter of Ralph Lamar and Vera Lee (Findley) Caston. She married Arthur Smith on September 19, 1949. He died in 2009.
She owned and operated a body shop along with her husband and renovated houses.
She was a member of Burlington Baptist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Muscatine.
She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and vegetables. She loved the Lord.
Survivors include her three children; Steve Smith of Lancaster, New York, David Smith of Garland, Texas and Judy (Steve) Crile of Muscatine, Iowa; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one brother Lloyd (Velma) Caston of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 7th at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Kendall Adams will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service on Saturday, where the family will receive friends.
A memorial has been established for Burlington Baptist Church.
