Friends of Cascade Seek Solution

Burlington, Ia-  The issue of what to do about Cascade Bridge had been a hot topic in the city of Burlington for some time now.  The bridge has been closed off from all forms of traffic and the city has made attempts to move towards demolishing the bridge.  However, a group is known as ‘Friends of Cascade” has started a campaign to raise public funds in order to save the bridge from replacement.  Terry Allano From Friends of Cascade says the bridge means more than just an easy route to Crapo Park.

“That bridge has been part of the great river road since it began, which starts in Minnesota and it ends in the Gulf of Mexico, and so here we are, Burlington the historic town that we are with a detour around our bridge.”

And Allano believes that the city should reconsider their plans to possibly have the bridge demolished.

The city council is already thinking way ahead, along with this consulting firm that they’re gonna take that off the national register of historic places and they’re gonna tear it down.  And we just want to put the brakes on that and to look at it and say what can we do?”

The group’s current goal is to raise $8,000 for an independent study to be conducted on the bridge in order to evaluate future plans.
