Marjorie Smith, 94, passed away peacefully in her Fort Collins home December 22, 2014. Born in Oakville, Iowa February 2, 1920 to Samuel and Susanna (Goss) Wykert, Marjorie was the youngest of six children. Ethyl, John, Pearl, Ernest and Howard all preceded her in death. On May 31, 1941 she was united in marriage to De Los Russell Smith. After De Los returned from serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, they made their home in Oakville and later in Burlington, Iowa where they raised their only daughter, Margaret. Margaret married Robert (Rob) Cieslicki in 1980, and they owned and operated Sunchase Tours Inc. in Fort Collins for 25 years. In 1999, Marjorie and De Los relocated to be close to them. De Los passed away in January 2001. Marjorie graduated from Columbus Junction High School in Columbus Junction, Iowa and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She began her teaching career in a one-room school house close to the family farm near Oakville. Later she worked as a teacher’s aide and office assistant at Sunnyside Elementary School in Burlington for twenty two years before retiring at age 72. She is survived by their loving daughter, Margaret and her husband Rob, sisters-in law Joan Smith Rice (John) and Jean Smith Nelson (the late Joseph), twelve nieces and nephews and their families. Sharon Elizabeth Burns, age 46, of Oakville, died Monday evening, December 22, 2014, at her home. The daughter of William Duane and Barbara E. Chinlund Gerst, she was born on July 7, 1968 in Burlington. She married Michael ‘Mike’ Burns on September 21, 2002 in Oakville.
Sharon graduated from Wapello High School in 1986 and attended business college in the Quad Cities. She worked as a cook for several restaurants in the Quad Cities and later at Gusto’s, her family restaurant, in Oakville and then others in Oakville. In recent years she worked at S & J Tube in Wapello.
She enjoyed cooking, playing pool, and fishing. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oakville.
Her family includes her husband, Mike; a daughter, Rachel at home; her mother, Barbara Gerst of Oakville; her grandmother, Verlee Gerst of Wapello; two brothers, Bill Gerst of Oakville and Robert ‘Bob’ Gerst of Mediapolis; and several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Duane.

Rikki Allan Powell, 62, of Burlington, died at the Florida Hospital, Orlando, Florida, on Thursday, December 18, 2014.
Born on January 3, 1952 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Chester and Barbara Jean Miller Powell. He was raised by his grandparents, Henry Clay and Minnie Bell Miller. He married Pamela Pfadenhauer on February 11, 1978 in Burlington, Iowa.
Rikki was a graduate of Southeastern Community College where he was a member of the college golf team. He worked as custodian for Edward Stone School and also worked at Pepsi Cola Bottling Company and Montgomery Wards for 29 years, mainly in the electronics department. Continue Reading
Robert Dean Cortelyou, 73, of Urbana, IL, formerly of LaHarpe, IL passed away Monday, December 15, 2014 at his home. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, December 22, 2014 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe with Pastor Shawn Cortelyou officiating. Burial will be in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Ms. Ruby Annabelle Bavery, 83, of LaHarpe, IL passed way at 1:15 PM Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at the hospice house in West Burlington, IA. She was born on September 29, 1931, the daughter of Floyd and Charlotte Bolton Bavery. She attended school in Basco, IL and was a 1949 graduate of the Warsaw High School. Ronald Glenn Jack, age 78, of Wapello, died Saturday, December 13, 2014, at his home. The son of Claude Glenn and Mary Violet Viner Jack, he was born on May 29, 1936 in Wapello. He graduated from Wapello High School in 1954.
He farmed for several years and worked for GE a short time and then with the Iowa Department of Transportation. Later he worked for Tri Oak in Oakville. He enjoyed small engine repair and collected lawn mowers.
Ron is survived by his two sons, Chuck Jack of Sartell, Minnesota and Ron Jack, Jr. of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

David Paul Mathias, 60, of Burlington, died at 6:45 AM Monday, December 8, 2014, at his home in Burlington.
Born November 7, 1954, in Agency, IA, he was the son of Clifford and Donna Holcome Mathias. He married Lila Henson.
David worked as a construction worker.
