Billie Ann Good, 65, of Burlington, died at 11:29 AM Thursday, January 2, 2014, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.  

Born August 9, 1948, in Hobbs, NM, she was the daughter of Billy Jo and Annie Cecelia Howard Gilmore. On March 16, 1979, she married Thomas Dale Good in Burlington. He died July 22, 2013.  

Billie worked at Lehigh-Leopold for ten years and Lane Private Brands for seven years, and had a home daycare. Continue Reading →

William F. “Bill” Balbort, 76, of Burlington, died at 1:30 PM Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.  

Born August 2, 1937, in Burlington, he was the son of William F. and Ruth Babcock Balbort Sr. On September 15, 1962, he married Linda Hester Jacobson in Burlington. They shared 51 years of marriage.  

Bill grew up in Burlington.  He was a 1956 graduate of Burlington High School and served in the National Guard. Continue Reading →

Roy Wayne Woodson, 72, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center on Monday, December 30, 2013.     
Born on May 23, 1941 in Hannibal, Missouri, he was the son of Earl and Barbara Pipkin Woodson. He married Barbara Holbert on March 5, 1965 in Burlington, Iowa.     
Roy was a municipal land surveyor. He worked for 36 years for Des Moines County as survey crew chief and county inspector for secondary roads. Continue Reading →

Obituaries Saturday December 21st

Henry Joseph Pieper, 88 years, of Wever, Iowa died at 6:25 amFriday, December 20, 2013 at the West PointCareCenter, West Point, Iowa.  He was born November 27, 1925 in Houghton, Iowa, a son of Ernest and Elizabeth (Holtkamp) Pieper.  On February 4, 1950, he married Pauline Mary Bentler in Houghton, Iowa.  She preceded him in death.  Henry farmed in the Green Bay area since 1950.  He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Fort Madison, Iowa.     

 

He is survived by three daughters: Kathy (Bill) Real, of Silver City, New Mexico; Judy (Mark) Hunold, of West Point, Iowa; and Beverly (Russell) Steffensmeier, of Donnellson, Iowa; three sons: Thomas (Sue) Pieper, of Flagstaff, Arizona, Missouri; Karl (Sue) Pieper, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Craig (Shelly) Pieper, of Wever, Iowa; three brothers: William “Bud” (Glorine) Pieper, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Robert “Bob” (Evelyn) Pieper, of Pella, Iowa; and Bernard (Mary) Pieper, of North Platte, Nebraska; nineteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Agnes Pieper and Margaret Anderson, and one brother, John Pieper. 

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 amMonday, December 23, 2013 at Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Fort Madison, Iowa, with FatherMarkSpring as Celebrant.  Friends are invited to greet the family at a luncheon after mass at McAleer Hall.  Private family burial will be later at GethsemaneCemetery, FortMadison.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Schools, contributions may be made at the church or the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.  Online condolences to the Pieper Family may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel website, www.barrmemorialchapel.com.  Barr Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Sharon Kathryn Brantner, 67, of rural Fort Madison, IA, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 9:55 p.m. at the West PointCareCenter.  She was born on February 7, 1946 in Durand, WI to Arthur & Rose Schuh Ableidinger.  She married Thomas J. Brantner on January 16, 1965 in Durand, WI.  She was a homemaker and member of SacredHeartChurch, Holy Family Parish and the Altar & Rosary Society of the church.  She enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and playing slot machines.        Sharon is survived by: her husband: Tom Brantner of West Point, IA; 1-son: Brad (Angel) Brantner of Fort Madison, IA; 3-daughters: Brenda (Michael) Gulick of Fort Madison, IA, Barb (Steve) Furtado of Rochester, MA & Becky (Bradley) Bellamy of Indianola, IA; 10-grandchildren; 2-great grandchildren; 2-brothers: Ron (Sheila) Ashley of Kailua-Kona, HI & Gary (Debbie) Ableidinger of Jeffersonville, IN; 2-sisters: LaRose Murray of Cannon Falls, MN & Beatrice (Bernard) Schlosser of Mission, TX.  She was preceded in death by: her parents and 2-brothers: Darold & Van.        The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. with a wake service to be held at 3:30 p.m. all on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory.  The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church, Holy Family Parish with Rev. Mr. Lldon L. Little, 84, of LaHarpe, IL passed away Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 1:40 PM in the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center. He was born December 20, 1928 in Stronghurst, Illinois, the son of Guy and Mary Hutson Little. On July 23, 1950 Lldon married Lucille Johnson in LaHarpe. Florence Miller, 73, of New London died Thursday, December 12, 2013 in the emergency room at HenryCountyHealthCenter.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London. Charles Alvin Nelson, age 84, of Mediapolis, died Thursday morning, December 12, 2013, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis.  The son of Russel and Evelyn Pilling Nelson, he was born on July 17, 1929 in rural Mediapolis.  He married Anne Hutchcroft on June 15, 1950 in Mediapolis.  She died February 6, 1978.  Charles married Marge Mellinger on August 15, 1980 in Mediapolis.       He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1948 and from Iowa State University with an Ag Degree.  He taught Ag for two years at Redfield, Iowa where he established their first FFA Chapter.  He then came back to Mediapolis to farm with his dad on the family farm NE of Mediapolis. 
     Charlie was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis where he had served as an elder and Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir.  He was a Farm Bureau member and had served on the MediapolisSchool Board.  He enjoyed camping, the Cubs, Hawkeyes, and Cyclones.      His family includes his wife Marge of Mediapolis; children, Brent & Chris Nelson of Gladstone, Illinois, Denise & Herschel Smuck of Mediapolis, Fred & Luann Nelson of Mediapolis; Duane & Jeanie Mellinger of Port Aransas, Texas, Dwight & Mary Mellinger of Burlington, and including a daughter –in-law, Leanne Nelson of Mediapolis; eleven grandchildren, Tracy & Scott Lipper, Deanne Walljasper, Jasper & Kristine Walljasper, Robyn Smuck, Eden & Garret Wahlers, Michele & Dan Evans, Joshua, Caleb, and Jacob Nelson, Russ & Alaina Nelson, and Sarah & KCasey Jackson; four great grandchildren, Leevi Walljasper, Bailey, Hailey, and Mack Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anne; a son, Ed; and a sister, Fern Gustafson.      The funeral ceremony for Charles Nelson will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 16, 2013, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis.  Pastor Dan Baker will officiate.  Burial will follow at the KossuthCemetery. Karma Kaye Ellard, 52, and her husband, Audie Crawford Ellard II, 59, died Monday, December 9, 2013 in a fire at their home in St. Paul, Iowa. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 13, 2013 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  According to their wishes, the bodies have been cremated, and inurnment will be in Burge Cemetery.  Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM on Friday with the family greeting friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to help pay funeral expenses. Mrs. Mary M. Douglas, 91, of rural Dallas City, Illinois passed away a 2:00 A.M.Monday, December 9, 2013 at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, LaHarpe, Illinois.
