Dena Irena Woods, 97, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa on Wednesday afternoon, October 16, 2013.     
Born on December 14, 1915 in Brashear, Missouri, she was the daughter of Elza S. and Eva D. Reynolds Cooper. She married Virgil Thomas on February 23, 1933 in Kirksville, Missouri.

Emma Elizabeth Ritchey, 15, of New London died Saturday, October 12, 2013 in an accident east of New London.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London. Patricia A. Wiegard, 84, of Burlington, died at 7:01 PM Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Sharon Kay Ives, 74, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Morning Sun Care Center, Morning Sun, Iowa, on Wednesday, October 9, 2013.     
Born on May 29, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Virgil “Mike” and Elizabeth Huston Watkins. Sharon met Ralph D. Ives in 1976 and after a long courtship they married on December 19, 1985 in Burlington, Iowa.

Obituaries Thursday October 10th

Betty A. Hutchcroft, age 89, of Mediapolis, died Tuesday evening, October 8, 2013, at the GreatRiver Hospice House in West Burlington.  The daughter of PearlI. and Ola A. Beck Gabeline, she was born on October 14, 1923 in Yarmouth.  She married Charles ‘Chuck’ Hutchcroft on July 29, 1945 in Mediapolis.  
Betty graduated from YarmouthHigh School in 1941 and attended BurlingtonJunior College.  She was a homemaker and enjoyed helping on the farm.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the UMW and church circles, American Legion Auxiliary, Sunshine Club, TTT, and King’s Daughters all of Mediapolis.  
Betty was an excellent cook and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and gardening.  She will always be remembered for her devotion to her family, especially to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and all of their activities.  
Her family includes her husband, Chuck; a daughter, Lynn & Bill Carlson of Burlington; two sons, Tom & Maureen Hutchcroft of Keokuk and Tim & Deb Hutchcroft of Mediapolis; four grandchildren, Curt Carlson, Angie & Matt Shriver, Kristin & Lance Eland, and Krystal & Ryan McLain; and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Ellen Hutchcroft; and three sisters, Bernice Yohe, Ethel Mary Walker, and Elizabeth as a child. Helen Burdette Roach, 96, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday morning, October 8, 2013.     
Born on January 10, 1917 in New London, Missouri, she was the daughter of Herbert T. and Laura King Birditt. She married Willie Roach on June 23, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on February 12, 1990.

Julia was born on July 8, 1929 in Memphis, Missouri. Her parents were Jewel H. and Susanna H. Mendenhall Robinson and step-father, Byron Harl.

Maribeth Essex, 77, of Stronghurst, IL died at 10:28 AM Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the  Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.  

Born May 9, 1936, in Oquawka, IL, she was the daughter of Clifford S. and Nannie Hightower Essex.  

Maribeth worked at Warren Achievement Sheltered Workshop in Monmouth, the Hub Restaurant and did baby sitting.

Obituaries Friday September 27th

Neil Allen, age 83, or rural Morning Sun, died Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at the GreatRiverMedicalCenter in West Burlington.  The son of Noel and Elta Garvey Allen, he was born on July 18, 1930 in Roseville, Ohio.  He married Jill Ellen Henry on June 18, 1955 in Kearney, Nebraska.  
Jerry graduated from RosevilleHigh School in Ohio.  He attended ValparaisoCollege in Indiana.  He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.  He worked for GE as a Quality Control Engineer.  
He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Lynchburg, Virginia and a member of the Mediapolis Lions Club.  He enjoyed woodcarving, especially creating miniature clocks, doing crosswords, and computer activities.  
His family includes his wife, Jill; a son, Charles Allen of Morning Sun; two daughters, Jane & Tom Cranston of Coralville and Nancy & Owen Ryder of Quebec, Canada; four grandchildren, Jessica & Jason Clark, Robert ‘RJ’ Hergert, Eric Pershing, and Carter Pershing; four great grandchildren, Sierra Rose, Christopher, Lea, and Ashley; a sister, Susan Horn of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Helen Allen of Brazil, Indiana; and an extended family including Luke & Anne-Mie Van Zandvliet of Belgium, Cory Dergance & Jason Darnell of Peru, Illinois, Bradley Murphy of Hephzibah, Georgia, Ann & Homer Keith of Cambridge, Ohio, and Rusty Johnson of Texas.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Noel; and two half-sisters, Dorothy Darnell and Jean Read.  
The family will meet friends on Sunday, September 29, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.  The funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 30, 2013, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home with Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating.  Cremation will follow the services and burial will take place at a later date in Kearney, Nebraska. Continue Reading →
