Roy Wayne Woodson, 72, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center on Monday, December 30, 2013.
Born on May 23, 1941 in Hannibal, Missouri, he was the son of Earl and Barbara Pipkin Woodson. He married Barbara Holbert on March 5, 1965 in Burlington, Iowa.
Roy was a municipal land surveyor. He worked for 36 years for Des Moines County as survey crew chief and county inspector for secondary roads. Continue Reading
Henry Joseph Pieper, 88 years, of Wever, Iowa died at 6:25 amFriday, December 20, 2013 at the West PointCareCenter, West Point, Iowa. He was born November 27, 1925 in Houghton, Iowa, a son of Ernest and Elizabeth (Holtkamp) Pieper. On February 4, 1950, he married Pauline Mary Bentler in Houghton, Iowa. She preceded him in death. Henry farmed in the Green Bay area since 1950. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Fort Madison, Iowa.
He is survived by three daughters: Kathy (Bill) Real, of Silver City, New Mexico; Judy (Mark) Hunold, of West Point, Iowa; and Beverly (Russell) Steffensmeier, of Donnellson, Iowa; three sons: Thomas (Sue) Pieper, of Flagstaff, Arizona, Missouri; Karl (Sue) Pieper, of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Craig (Shelly) Pieper, of Wever, Iowa; three brothers: William “Bud” (Glorine) Pieper, of Fort Madison, Iowa; Robert “Bob” (Evelyn) Pieper, of Pella, Iowa; and Bernard (Mary) Pieper, of North Platte, Nebraska; nineteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Agnes Pieper and Margaret Anderson, and one brother, John Pieper.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 amMonday, December 23, 2013 at Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Fort Madison, Iowa, with FatherMarkSpring as Celebrant. Friends are invited to greet the family at a luncheon after mass at McAleer Hall. Private family burial will be later at GethsemaneCemetery, FortMadison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Schools, contributions may be made at the church or the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa. She was born on February 7, 1946 in Durand, WI to Arthur & Rose Schuh Ableidinger. She married Thomas J. Brantner on January 16, 1965 in Durand, WI. She was a homemaker and member of SacredHeartChurch, Holy Family Parish and the Altar & Rosary Society of the church. She enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting and playing slot machines. Florence Miller, 73, of New London died Thursday, December 12, 2013 in the emergency room at HenryCountyHealthCenter. Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London. Charles Alvin Nelson, age 84, of Mediapolis, died Thursday morning, December 12, 2013, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis. The son of Russel and Evelyn Pilling Nelson, he was born on July 17, 1929 in rural Mediapolis. He married Anne Hutchcroft on June 15, 1950 in Mediapolis. She died February 6, 1978. Charles married Marge Mellinger on August 15, 1980 in Mediapolis. He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1948 and from Iowa State University with an Ag Degree. He taught Ag for two years at Redfield, Iowa where he established their first FFA Chapter. He then came back to Mediapolis to farm with his dad on the family farm NE of Mediapolis.
Charlie was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis where he had served as an elder and Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. He was a Farm Bureau member and had served on the MediapolisSchool Board. He enjoyed camping, the Cubs, Hawkeyes, and Cyclones. His family includes his wife Marge of Mediapolis; children, Brent & Chris Nelson of Gladstone, Illinois, Denise & Herschel Smuck of Mediapolis, Fred & Luann Nelson of Mediapolis; Duane & Jeanie Mellinger of Port Aransas, Texas, Dwight & Mary Mellinger of Burlington, and including a daughter –in-law, Leanne Nelson of Mediapolis; eleven grandchildren, Tracy & Scott Lipper, Deanne Walljasper, Jasper & Kristine Walljasper, Robyn Smuck, Eden & Garret Wahlers, Michele & Dan Evans, Joshua, Caleb, and Jacob Nelson, Russ & Alaina Nelson, and Sarah & KCasey Jackson; four great grandchildren, Leevi Walljasper, Bailey, Hailey, and Mack Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anne; a son, Ed; and a sister, Fern Gustafson. Karma Kaye Ellard, 52, and her husband, Audie Crawford Ellard II, 59, died Monday, December 9, 2013 in a fire at their home in St. Paul, Iowa. Vernon Floyd Muntz died Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Great River Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa. He was born August 30, 1922 at Farmington, Iowa the son of Earl Otto and Olive Watts Muntz. On January 9, 1947 he married Charlotte Louise Smith in San Diego, California.
Vernon served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a Machinist Tool & Die maker. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. Vernon was a graduate of Le Tourneau University receiving a bachelor’s degree as a tool maker. He was employed in various factories in Burlington, Iowa and retired from General Electric in 1987. During retirement years, he and his family traveled to national parks, museums and took tours in Mexico, Canada and went on many cruises. Survivors include his wife Charlotte of Burlington, one son Randy Muntz also of Burlington; one sister Pauline Varner of Ft. Madison, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Arvella Muntz and Maxine Kerr, one brother, Melvin Muntz and an infant son, Dennis. Funeral Services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Terry Vance will officiate. Interment will be in Sharon Cemetery, Lee County, Iowa. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
