Patricia Ellen Hillgartner, 77, of Fairfield, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. Funeral services for Mrs. Hillgartner will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor David Huskey will officiate. James ‘JimmyD’ Franklin Deitrick, age 61, of Mediapolis, died Thursday morning March 19, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Franklin A. and Elaine Ann Scott Deitrick, he was born on January 26, 1954 in Burlington. He married Dana Pfafflin and they later divorced.
He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1972. James worked in building construction first with Lloyd Schofield and later Bob Johnson, then US Gypsum, and then Carl A. Nelson. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis and also enjoyed fellowship at the First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis.
James ‘JimmyD’ enjoyed baseball and golf along with all the Mediapolis sports. He played for the River Chiefs Football in Burlington and coached baseball. He also enjoyed morning coffee at Apron Strings and sharing stories. ‘JimmyD’ loved being with his children and grandchildren. He never met a stranger.
His family includes his father, Franklin Deitrick of Mediapolis; a daughter, Michele & Ramondo ‘Doe’ Randle of Burlington; a son, Jeremy Deitrick of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandchildren, Taylor and Tristan Randle; two sisters, Debbie & Matthew Smithson of Waxahachie, Texas and Rochelle ‘Shelly’ & Rich Yotter of Oakville; and two brothers, Robert & Rhonda Deitrick of Burlington and Dale ‘Dutch’ & Denise Deitrick of Mediapolis. Karen Sue Quigley Dill, ARNP, age 60, of Morning Sun, died Tuesday morning, March 10, 2015, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center in Wapello. She was born on April 23, 1954 in Panama City, Florida and was a lifelong resident of Iowa.
Following cremation a funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 13, 2015, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 310 N. Johnson St., Iowa City. Rev. Robert Elgin will officiate.
A light reception at the church will follow the service.

Matthew William Hallman, 52, of Burlington, Iowa, died peacefully at home on Saturday morning, March 7, 2015 surrounded by family. Born on December 14, 1962 at Mercy Hospital in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Bill Hallman and M. Diane Wilson Mansheim. Matt was a 1981 graduate of Notre Dame High School. He studied Forestry at Muscatine Community College and attended Dade County Community College. He earned a B.S. in Industrial Technology from Western Illinois University in 1996; and an LPN degree from Southeastern Community College. Continue Reading
Betty L. Simmons, age 78 of Morning Sun, died Wednesday March 4, 2015 at the Morning Sun Care Center. The daughter of Carroll and Edna (Fox) Morehead, she was born May 3, 1936 at Maquoketa, Iowa. On August 22, 1953 she married Charles Simmons in Burlington; he died March 11, 2013. She was a graduate of the Morning Sun High School. She worked at Bi-State in Buffalo, Iowa, was a homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed reading and the outdoors, especially flowers and birds.
Survivors include: one son, Rick and JoBeth Simmons of Morning Sun; two daughters, Grace Hartman and Dan Wischmeier of Yarmouth; Kerry and Ed Wilkerson of Morning Sun; six grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren;
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one great grandson.
According to her wishes cremation has been accorded.
The family will meet with friends Tuesday March 10th from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun. A private family graveside will be on Wednesday at the Elmwood Cemetery.
Kevin Reed Hazell, 61, of Burlington, died at 5:52 pm Monday, March 2, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington surrounded by his family.
Born July 18, 1953, in Burlington, IA, he was the fourth son of Arthur Franklin and Wilma Dot Reed Hazell.
He was a 1971 graduate of Burlington High School.
Kevin lived a rich life, with jobs as diverse as a deckhand on the Mississippi River to a painter at Western Illinois University, where he spent much of his career. No matter where he lived or worked, he remained a talented artist, craftsman, and musician. Continue Reading
