Margaret Elaine Hansen, 73, of Burlington, Iowa, died at University of Iowa Hospitals, in Iowa City, Iowa on Sunday, April 26, 2015.  

Margaret fashioned a beautiful life with a foundation of faith, family, friendships and service.  Her life journey was made with a sense of fun and adventure and always, with an abiding love for those she cared for.  

Born on September 24, 1941 in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the daughter of John Laverl & Mildred Ruth Walker Dooley. She married Robert Lowell Hansen on May 1, 1965 in Burlington, Iowa.  

Margaret was employed at the Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper for 24 years and the March of Dimes for 5 years.  After she retired she worked part time for the Community Foundation of Des Moines County.  She previously worked for Make Today Count. Continue Reading

Marcella “Sally” M. Duffield, 91, West Burlington died Thursday 4/30 at Blair House Nursing and Rehab. She is survived by 2 sons, David Zeller of Burlington and James Zeller of Bolingbrook, IL., 2 daughters, Margaret Godden of San Diego, CA and Donna Fryrear of Tucson, AZ, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday May 9th in Lunning Chapel with burial in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of service.  

Teresa J. Neally, 56, of Fort Madison, died at 4:18 am Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory. Continue Reading

Mervin R. Klees, 86, of Burlington, died at 6:00 PM Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at the Oak Lane Nursing and Rehab in Stronghurst.  

Born March 13, 1929, in Waukon, IA he was the son of Ralph Henry and Marie Isabelle Mitchell Klees. On January 22, 1955, he married Carole M. Osweiler in Farmington, IA.  

In his youth he worked on the Levi Miller farm south of Burlington. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in February of 1951. Continue Reading

Mrs. Henrietta Palmer, 94, of Stronghurst, IL passed away Saturday April 25, 2015 at her home. She was born February 4, 1921 near Downing, MO the daughter of Orville and Julia Crowder Jackson. On February 3, 1946 she married Carson “Ed” Palmer at the Christian Church in Keokuk, IA. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1997.  

Prior to her marriage Mrs. Palmer worked as a secretary in Lancaster, MO and at Keokuk Electro-Metals in Keokuk, IA. Continue Reading

Astrid Holoubek, 99, of West Burlington, died at 2:04 AM Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.  

Born July 30, 1915, in Los Angeles, CA, she was the daughter of Rolf and Amanda Avall Berentsen. On May 29, 1939, she married Hilbert A. Holoubek in St. Peters Episcopal Church in San Pedro, CA. He died February 8, 2008.  

Survivors include one son-in-law, Bruce Casady of Burlington; one grandson, Scott (Diane) Casady of West Des Moines, IA; one granddaughter, Karen (David) Chicken of Waukee, IA; one great-grandson, Jonathan Chicken of Waukee, IA; two great-granddaughters, Sarah Chicken of Waukee, IA, and Finley Casady of West Des Moines, IA; and several nieces & nephews. Obituaries Thursday April 23rd

Marjorie Lou Dickey, 80 years, of Houston, Texas and formerly of Donnellson and Fort Madison, Iowa died at 9:40 am Monday, April 20, 2015 at the East Houston Regional Medical Center, Houston, Texas.  She was born April 24, 1934 at Sullivan, Illinois, the daughter of Delbert Wade and Ruth Olga (Derring) Sullivan.  On March 3, 1954, she married Matthew “Wendell” Dickey at Cantril, Illinois.  He survives.  

Marjorie was a 1952 graduate of Fox Valley High School, Cantril, Iowa.  She was a homemaker. She also worked for a period of time at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in the pharmacy department.  She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading mystery novels, and genealogy.  

She is survived by her husband, Matthew “Wendell” Dickey, of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Rhonda Dickey, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Karen Dickey, of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Bill (Connie) Sullivan, Cantril, Iowa and Steve (Janell) Sullivan, of Hollister, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Martha Sullivan, of Milton, Iowa and Joyce Dickey, of Donnellson, Iowa; nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Roger Sullivan.  

Her family will greet friends for visitation from 5:00 – 6:30 pm Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, Fort Madison, Iowa.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, April 27, 2015 at the Barr Memorial Chapel, with Reverend John Simpson officiating.  Burial with be at Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa.  A memorial has been established for the Donnellson Public Library or the family, contributions may be left at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services.  Online condolences to the Dickey family may be made at the Barr Memorial Chapel and Cremation Services website, Continue Reading

The graveside service for Mrs. Ophelia Bryant, 82, of New London, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at Burge Cemetery, rural New London.  Pastor Rod Cooper will officiate.  A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice, West Burlington.  Elliott Chapel, New London, is in charge of arrangements.  

Mary Joyce Goodlove, 80, of Burlington, died at 6:05 PM Monday, April 20, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  

Born May 12, 1934, in Davenport, she was the daughter of Leo Anthony Sr. and Ruby Mae Brewer Stuckel.  On October 23, 1965, she married Jack Goodlove in Galesburg, IL.  

Mary was a homemaker.

Obituaries Monday April 20th

Dennis Ray ‘Tarz’ Stephens, age 63, of Mediapolis and formerly of Wapello, died Friday evening, April 17, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  The son of Ray and Carol Huddle Stephens, he was born on July 9, 1951 in Burlington.  

He graduated from Wapello High School in 1969.  Tarz married Nancy Messer and later Chris Herr Dickel both of which were later divorced.  He married Penny Schwerin Habben on July 11, 1992 near Kingston, Iowa.  

He worked a short time on a drilling rig.  He was a printing press operator with the Hawk Eye, Mediapolis New Era, and Louisa Publishing Company in Wapello.  He had been active with the Jaycees and enjoyed photography, music, his friends and family especially his grandchildren.  

He is survived by his wife, Penny; two daughters, Ashley Stephens of Wapello and Sarah Stephens of Lakeland, Florida; his mother Carol Parsons of Wapello; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Mark Stephens of Wapello and Jay & Debbie Stephens of Vail, Arizona; step children, Daniell Peterson of Centerville, Josh Habben of Des Moines, and Ralph Dickel of Cedar Rapids; and two step brothers, Kirby Parsons of Dodgeville and Calvin Parsons of Wapello.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray; a brother, David; his step father, Bernard Parsons; and a brother-in-law, Darrel Schwerin. Continue Reading

Bauer, 87, West Burlington died Thursday 4/16 at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center. He is survived by 4 sons, Larry and Rick of Burlington, Terry of Houston, TX and Johnny of Richmond, TX, a brother Gary of Burlington and a sister, Melva Mae Eernisse of Reseda, CA, 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1030 AM Tuesday 4/21 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the South Walker Cemetery.  Friends may call after noon on Monday 4/20 with the family receiving friends from 6-730 PM.
