Jerry Robert Baker, age 45, of rural Wapello, died Sunday morning, April 12, 2015, in a motorcycle accident near Oakville. The son of Jerry Robert Baker and Connie O’Callaghan Baker, he was born on March 23, 1970 in Davenport. He married Kelly Melissa Guberud on August 27, 2011 Lake Odessa in Wapello.
He had worked in installation for Wisconsin Terrazzo and Tile through the Allied Craft Workers Local.
Jerry enjoyed boating, motorcycling, kayaking, mechanical repairing, and family activities especially outdoors with his boys and his nieces and nephews. He was known as a child whisperer.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Kelly; two sons, Logan Ryan and Lucas Lee both at home; his mother, Connie Baker of Wapello; a sister, Laura K. Hoover of Wapello; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Tammy Bloomer Bealer.
Following cremation a Celebration of Life for Jerry will be held at his home at Lake Odessa on Saturday, April 18, 2015, beginning at noon. Continue Reading
Alice I. Bragg, 78, Burlington died Saturday 4/11 at her home. She is survived by 2 sons, John and William of Burlington, 3 daughters, Shawna Wheatley and Roberta Ferguson of Burlington and Tammy Grisham of Lomax, IL, a sister, Martha Hudson of Terre Haute, IN, 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tue 4/14 at Lunning Chapel in Burlington with the family receiving friends Mon 4/13 from 6-8 PM at Lunnings.
Floyd E. ‘Peck’ Dean, Jr., age 91 of Morning Sun, died Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the Morning Sun Care Center. The son of Floyd E. Dean, Sr. and Eva Lewis Dean, he was born on December 26, 1923 in Columbus Junction. He married H. Darlene Bryant on November 14, 1941 in Canton, Missouri. She preceded him in death on January 14, 2014.
He graduated from Columbus Junction High School and served in the US Army during WW II as a Manitowoc crane operator loading Liberty Ships in Iceland. Peck was a truck driver and mechanic operating Dean’s Tru Trail in Morning Sun. He had received a US Patent on a frame alignment machine for semi trailer repairs. Brittany Leann Russell, 18, Fort Madison died Sunday 4/5 at the Great River Medical Center. She is survived by her parents, Stacie and Robert Haynes of Fort Madison and Craig Russell of Burlington, grandparents Alvie Land of Quincy and Lawrence and Ramona Haynes of Mt. Treva Marie Beard, age 97, of Burlington and formerly of Mediapolis and Grandview, died Saturday morning, April 4, 2015, at the Klein Center of Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The daughter of Arthur and Mabel Ball Stone, she was born on March 15, 1918 in rural Wapello. Treva married Glenn D. Beard on February 25, 1937 in Gladstone, Illinois. He preceded her in death on November 26, 2011.
She graduated from Wapello High School in 1936. She and Glenn lived and farmed near Elrick Junction for a short time and then farmed near Grandview from 1942 to 1948. They then farmed in the Mediapolis area. They both worked at Thie’s Grocery Store. In 1957 they purchased the Grandview Market in Grandview and operated it for 12 years. Later Treva worked at various jobs including Dr. Goad and also Batterson’s Clothing both in Muscatine.
After retiring, Treva enjoyed volunteer work in her church and community in Grandview. Treva was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church. She was also very active as an early member of the Louisa County Historical Society providing many articles and information for their quarterly magazine. She enjoyed traveling with various tours and keeping in touch with her children and grandchildren with visits and computer emails. She also enjoyed playing cards and canvas painting.
Her family includes five children, Ray Dean & Marie Beard of Northville, Michigan, Shirley & Kay Harsin of Knoxville, Marvin & Linda Beard of Davenport, Betty Eversmeyer of Burlington, and Bill & Sharon Beard of Columbus Junction; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; eleven great great grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Stone of Wapello; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Stone of Wapello; and several nieces and nephews.
