Obituaries Monday April 6th

Treva Marie Beard, age 97, of Burlington and formerly of Mediapolis and Grandview, died Saturday morning, April 4, 2015, at the Klein Center of Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.  The daughter of Arthur and Mabel Ball Stone, she was born on March 15, 1918 in rural Wapello.  Treva married Glenn D. Beard on February 25, 1937 in Gladstone, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on November 26, 2011.  

She graduated from Wapello High School in 1936.  She and Glenn lived and farmed near Elrick Junction for a short time and then farmed near Grandview from 1942 to 1948. They then farmed in the Mediapolis area.  They both worked at Thie’s Grocery Store.  In 1957 they purchased the Grandview Market in Grandview and operated it for 12 years.  Later Treva worked at various jobs including Dr. Goad and also Batterson’s Clothing both in Muscatine.  

After retiring, Treva enjoyed volunteer work in her church and community in Grandview.  Treva was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church.  She was also very active as an early member of the Louisa County Historical Society providing many articles and information for their quarterly magazine.  She enjoyed traveling with various tours and keeping in touch with her children and grandchildren with visits and computer emails.  She also enjoyed playing cards and canvas painting.  

Her family includes five children, Ray Dean & Marie Beard of Northville, Michigan, Shirley & Kay Harsin of Knoxville, Marvin & Linda Beard of Davenport, Betty Eversmeyer of Burlington, and Bill & Sharon Beard of Columbus Junction; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; eleven great great grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Stone of Wapello; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Stone of Wapello; and several nieces and nephews. Obituaries Friday April 3rd

Mary Jane Baker, 84, of Burlington, died at 12:23 AM, Thursday, April 2, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  

Born September 28, 1930, in Iowa City, she was the daughter of Frank Oscar and Frances Verl Palmer Murray. On October 3, 1947, she married George Theodore Baker in Burlington.  

Mary Jane was a homemaker.  

She was a graduate from Burlington High School.  She was a member of Grace Anglican Church. Continue Reading

Shirley I. Hill, 83, Middletown died Sunday 3/29 at the Danville Care Center. She is survived by her husband, Dwight, a son, Steve of Danville, 3 daughters, Angela Smith of Middletown, Joni Karle of Burlington and Julie Danker of Waterloo, 2 sisters, Carol Wheeler and Mary Stogdill of Burlington, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Memorial Funeral Services will be held at 2PM Fri 4/3 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Middletown Cemetery at a later date.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the time of service.

Richard P.” Smokey” Abrisz, 84, of Burlington, died at 12:30 PM Saturday, March 28, 2015, at the Donnellson Health Care Center in Donnellson.  

Born December 15, 1930, in Burlington, he was the son of Joseph Edward and Hazel Minnie Goetz Abrisz. He married Esther Elizabeth Madden, on July 7, 1952 in Tucson, AZ. Marrying Esther was the smartest thing he ever did. Continue Reading

Walter G. Funck, 94, Burlington died Wed 3/25 at his home. He is survived by his wife Jean, a son James of Gig Harbor, WA and a daughter, Gretchen Lewis of Burlington, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Obituaries Tuesday March 24th

Ralph Delbert Ives, 71, of Burlington, Iowa, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa.  He was born January 3, 1944 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Louis E. and Viola E. Smutzer Ives.  He met Sharon K. Watkins in 1976 and after a long courtship they were married on December 19, 1985 in Burlington, Iowa.  She died October 9, 2013. Ralph served in the U.S. Navy as Petty Officer from 1966 to 1968.  He was a machinist for Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years.  He was of the Protestant faith.  Ralph enjoyed family gatherings with Sharon, traveling when able, cookouts, fish fry’s, fishing, mushroom hunting, NASCAR Racing and gardening. Ralph is survived by one sister, Mary Lou Ives of Danville, Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Sue Ives of Burlington and Celia (Richard) Anderson also of Burlington, Iowa; several nieces, nephews and many friends of the family.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon; one sister, Joanne Rudicil; and one brother, Clifford. Blaine Jones, 56, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 8:08 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. Patricia Ellen Hillgartner, 77, of Fairfield, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. Funeral services for Mrs. Hillgartner will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Pastor David Huskey will officiate.  Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery, rural Danville.  Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, March 20 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Chapel.  A memorial has been established. Obituaries Thursday March 19th

James ‘JimmyD’ Franklin Deitrick, age 61, of Mediapolis, died Thursday morning March 19, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  The son of Franklin A. and Elaine Ann Scott Deitrick, he was born on January 26, 1954 in Burlington.  He married Dana Pfafflin and they later divorced.  

He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1972.  James worked in building construction first with Lloyd Schofield and later Bob Johnson, then US Gypsum, and then Carl A. Nelson.  He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis and also enjoyed fellowship at the First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis.  

James ‘JimmyD’ enjoyed baseball and golf along with all the Mediapolis sports.  He played for the River Chiefs Football in Burlington and coached baseball.  He also enjoyed morning coffee at Apron Strings and sharing stories.  ‘JimmyD’ loved being with his children and grandchildren.  He never met a stranger.  

His family includes his father, Franklin Deitrick of Mediapolis; a daughter, Michele & Ramondo ‘Doe’ Randle of Burlington; a son, Jeremy Deitrick of St. Louis, Missouri; two grandchildren, Taylor and Tristan Randle; two sisters, Debbie & Matthew Smithson of Waxahachie, Texas and Rochelle ‘Shelly’ & Rich Yotter of Oakville; and two brothers, Robert & Rhonda Deitrick of Burlington and Dale ‘Dutch’ & Denise Deitrick of Mediapolis.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine.
