Eleanor Jeanne Kindig, 91, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 in the Danville Care Center, Danville, Iowa. Born July 21, 1923 in Fort Madison, Iowa she was the daughter of Arthur Franklin and Nina Parson Davis. On May 23, 1944 she married Robert Leroy Kindig in Burlington, Iowa. Dorothy Elizabeth Odle, age 87, of Wapello, died Sunday morning, February 1, 2015, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center. The daughter of Otto and Johanna Kuester Umlandt, she was born on June 10, 1927 in Muscatine. Dorothy married Hilton B. Odle on May 31, 1953 in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on December 18, 2009.
Dorothy graduated from Muscatine High School and attended Muscatine Junior College to receive her teaching certificate. In later years she received her four year degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. She was an elementary teacher first in Wapello and then later taught at both Lett’s and Grandview elementary schools and retired from teaching from L & M elementary school.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, the T.O.P.S. 1118 in Wapello, the Wapello Study Club, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Louisa County Retired Teachers. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint, and flower gardening.
Her family includes a daughter, Terri & Kirk McElhinney of Johnson City, Texas; a son, Steve & Anita Odle of Wapello; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hilton; a son, KC; and an infant sister. Continue Reading
Patricia Ann ‘Pat’ Parsons, age 86, of Wapello, died at her home Wednesday morning, January 28, 2015. The daughter of Clair and Hazel Stone Clark, she was born on March 15, 1928 at Columbus Junction. She married Jack Parsons on August 23, 1947 at Columbus Junction. He preceded her in death on July 28, 2005.
She graduated from Columbus Community High School in 1946. Patricia was an outstanding partner in the farming operation with Jack. She participated in all phases of the operation. Pat was the first woman in Iowa to get a Chemical Applicators license. She traveled with Jack to Russia when he helped get a long term grain agreement negotiated. Pat belonged to the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the National Corn Growers Association. She was a 50+ year member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the Farm Bureau.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane & Ed Vineyard of Wapello; two sons, Diane’s twin brother, Dave & Marla Parsons of Wapello and Gary & Bev Parsons of Wapello; seven grandchildren, Tanya Patzner, Elizabeth Vineyard, Valeria Vineyard, Trent Parsons, Kristen Svalstad, Todd Parsons, and Troy Parsons; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Smith of Burlington; a special friend, Bob Gabeline and his family; and her special pets and companions, Pork Chop and Tabby. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; and three brothers, Bob, Keith, and Loren Clark.
The funeral ceremony for Pat Parsons will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. Burial will follow at the Mallory Cemetery, rural Wapello. Continue Reading
Dorothy R. Grant, 91, of Burlington, died at 3:50 PM, Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born May 30, 1923, in Argentina, KS, she was the daughter of Eliseo and Ignacia Rodriguez Murguia. On October 12, 1951, she married William T. Collins in Burlington. They later divorced. On July 7, 1973, she married Robert E. Grant in Burlington. He died January 1, 2008.

The Celebration of Life for Mrs. Anderson will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, January 30, 2015 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Rod Cooper will officiate. According to her wishes, her body has been cremated. Visitation will be held at the Chapel after noon on Thursday, January 29, with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Alma D. Crabbe, 76, of Dallas City, IL passed away at 1:20 AM Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at her home.
She was born February 21, 1938 in Quincy, IL the daughter of Denver and Cecilia Vanderboom Liggett. On August 29, 1959 she married Gene P. Crabbe in Quincy.
Alma worked as a cook at the Catholic School in Quincy from the late 1960’s until 1978. From 1986 until retiring in 1998 Alma worked as the Food Supervisor for the Illinois Prison System in Danville, IL. Continue Reading
Kevin Hugh Walters, 50, of Prairie View, Texas and formerly of Wayland, died suddenly Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in Bedford, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Wayland Mennonite Church where Mr. Walters was a member. Pastor Wayne Heffner will officiate. According to Mr. Walters wishes, the body has been cremated and inurnment will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the Kevin Hugh Walters Memorial has been established.
Walter Robert “Bob” Foss, 82 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa died at 6:22 pm Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born June 6, 1932, at Hartford, Connecticut, the only child of son of Walter W. and Roxcy (Peabody) Foss. On September 25, 1954, he married Carol Schroeder at Buffalo, New York. They were married 60 years. She survives.
Bob lived in Connecticut before moving to Fort Madison in 2010. He loved music and was a professional musician who played the violin, bass, and mandolin in orchestras while in Hartford Connecticut. He also worked as a tool maker and an inspector. He and his wife, Carol, owned and operated Tri-Town Travel for 20 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean War. He was a Catholic and a member of Holy Family Parish and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the BPOE Elks Club, where he served as Past Exalted Ruler in Connecticut. He was a member of the Lions Club while in Connecticut.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Foss, of Fort Madison, Iowa; four daughters: Jennifer (Steve) Cordova, of California; Kathryn (Michael) Brown, of Connecticut; Peg (Heather Fairchild) Foss, of New Hampshire; Sarah (David) Bonazza, of California; two sons, Jeffrey (Sheila) Foss, of Connecticut and Christopher (Ellen) Foss, of Ohio; 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. William Henry Smith, 88, of Burlington, died at 1:15 PM Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born February 24, 1926, in Tule River, CA, he was the son of Henry Turner and Bertha Iona Burk Smith. On July 26, 1997, he married Leah Mae Gladman in Grand Junction, CO. She died June 4, 2010.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the WWII from July 21, 1944 until June 29, 1946. He held the rank of Sergeant, served in the training batallion 59th anti aircraft placement stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX. He was the chief of sections on the gun crew. He received the good conduct medal- rifleman (expert), Campaign medal and the World War II victory medal. Continue Reading
