Obituaries Friday January 16th

Clara Adeline Gillen Zoeller, 92, of Des Moines, formerly of Burlington, died at 7:17 PM Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at the Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.  

Clara was born on December 20, 1922 in Kingman, Kansas, the youngest daughter of Andrew Gillen and Elizabeth (Osner) Gillen.  After graduation from high school in Kingman, Clara graduated in 1945 from the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas.  Upon graduation she became a member of the Army Nurse Cadet program.  When Clara returned to Kingman, she worked as the County Health Nurse until she married Francis. O. Zoeller on June 1, 1946.  Together they had four children; Barbara Zoeller (Richard Streit) of Dubuque, IA, Donna (Rex) Mundt of Ankeny, IA, Kevin Zoeller of Chicago, IL, and Mike Zoeller of Dekalb, IL; six grandchildren, Matthew Mundt (Monica) of Burlington, Noelle Mundt of Des Moines, IA, Lisa Benton of Rhode Island, Jeffrey Streit of Dubuque, IA, Lindsay Zoeller of Chicago, IL, and Stephanie Zoeller of Chicago, IL.  Clara also has three great-grandchildren, Brian and Kelsey Mundt of Burlington, and Jacob Mundt of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Lenora Zoeller of Kingman, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews.  

During the time Clara raised her young family, she did private duty nursing and volunteer work.  Later, Clara resumed her professional career as a Community Health nursing instructor at the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing until the school’s closure.  Clara continued in her nurse educator role as a consultant to many of the greater Burlington area long-term care facilities and the American Red Cross until her retirement.  She loved learning and teaching.  Once retired, Clara continued to be involved in the Burlington community serving in several leadership roles for community non-profit organizations and St. Continue Reading

Edward Joseph Kobs, 91, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, Iowa on Wednesday, January 14, 2015.  

Born on February 19, 1923 in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Edward B. and Marie E. Leiderman Kobs. He married Grace Evelyn May on August 6, 1945 in Burlington, Iowa. She died on November 26, 1983.  

Edward was in maintenance at Murray Iron Works over 20 years and then worked at IAAP for 5 years. Continue Reading

Obituaries Wednesday January 14th

Danny Lee Sands, age 64 of Mediapolis, died unexpectedly at his home Monday January 12, 2015.  The son of Dick and Barbara (Schneider) Sands, he was born October 5, 1950 at Burlington.  On July 19, 1968 he married Jamie Griffith in Morning Sun.  He graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1968.  He lettered in 5 sports in high school.  He attended SCC in Burlington for two years and graduated from NEMSU with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1972.  He was a pitcher for SCC and NEMSU during college.  Danny retired in 2010 from Muscatine power and water.  He worked as an electrician for many local contractors. He was a member of the Mediapolis United Methodist Church, where he was active in the worship team, the choir, and the hospitality committee.  He was a board member of the Mediapolis Community Theatre.  He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.  He also looked forward to Card night with his buddies.  His travels always included stops at Goodwill and thrift shops along the way.  He loved a good bargain.  

Survivors include:  his wife, Jamie; his Mother Barbara; one son Jeff Sands and  friend Mikki and her children Colby and Cami Whitaker; one daughter, Wendee and Jason Chase and grandchildren Emma and Ryan Chase; three sisters, Betsy and Fran Davis, Carla and Dan Weber, and Judy Sands.  

He was preceded in death by his Father and grandparents.

Joy E. Smith, 85, West Burlington, died on Thursday January 8th at the Great River Medical Center Klein Center. She is survived by a son, Larry of Burlington and a daughter, Connie Smith of Hendersonville, TN, 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 10AM Wed 1/14 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5-7PM Tue 1/13 at Lunnings.

Kay Ann Thacker, 70, of Burlington, died at 10:50 PM Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  

Born December 25, 1944, in Dallas City, IL, she was the daughter of Virgil Emery and Hazel Dell Booher Poulter. She married Terry Q. Newberry on January 19, 1962. On June 12, 1981, she married Clyde Edwin Thacker in Burlington. He died on October 7, 2007. Continue Reading

Obituaries Thursday January 8th

Myrtle Mae Bartenhagen Schlutz, age 95, lifelong resident of Grandview, died Tuesday morning, January 6, 2015, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center in Wapello.  The daughter of Guy Henry and Mabel Buster Hardman, she was born on December 7, 1919, in rural Grandview.  She married Walder Bartenhagen on October 4, 1939 in Sigourney.  He preceded her in death on November 1, 1969.  Myrtle married Dale Schlutz on January 2, 1971 in Grandview and he preceded her in death on March 4, 1993.  

She graduated from Grandview High School in 1937 and attended AIB in Davenport.  She was a homemaker and a seamstress and an active member of the Grandview Community Bible Church, serving as the church treasurer for 32 years, the AWANA secretary for 23 years, a Sunday school teacher, the Grandview Women’s Missionary, and the church choir.  She was also a member of the Lucky 13 Club and the Grandview Federated Club and had served as the Grandview City Clerk.  

Her family includes a son, Carl & Evelyn Bartenhagen of Omaha, Nebraska; two daughters, Elaine & Neil Wiele of West Liberty and Joan Woods of Wapello; five grandchildren, Michael & Lisa Bartenhagen, Katherine & Dave Merkley, Angela & Alan Feldman, Chad & Jennifer Grouwinkel, and Corey & Sarah Everts; two step grandchildren, Kevin Schlutz & Linda and Lynn & Howard Hagen; twelve great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Walder and Dale; a daughter, Suzanne Everts; a great granddaughter, Melissa; and two sisters, Bernice Snyder and Hilda Young.  

The funeral ceremony for Myrtle Schlutz will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Grandview Community Bible Church with Rev. Darryl Erickson and Pastor Rich Kolmus officiating.  Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery. Continue Reading

Obituaries Wednesday January 7th

David T. ‘Dave’ McCulley, age 81, of Toolesboro, rural Wapello, died Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center in Wapello.  He was born December 22, 1933 near Grandview.  Dave was next to the youngest of seven boys and the son of Glen R. and Ruth Cockerill McCulley.  He attended Indian Creek Country School in Louisa County through eighth grade and graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1951.  In 1954 he joined the US Army.  He served in Germany and was discharged in May of 1956.  

On August 11, 1956, he was united in marriage to Beverly J. Anderson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  They started married life farming with his father until 1962 when they moved to Oakville.  For 37 years he managed the feed mill at Oakville Feed & Grain, through fire and high water.  It is now Tri Oak Foods.  

Dave was a long time member of the Oakville United Methodist Church, served on the Oakville Town Council, and for many years as treasurer of Boy Scout Troop #57.  

He became an accomplished wood carver, and later enjoyed his greenhouse.  

With his wife they traveled all 48 states and Canada, many more than once, until Parkinson’s made traveling impossible. Continue Reading

Obituaries Tuesday December 30th

Angela Marie Lopez died Friday, December 26, 2014 at her home in Burlington.  She was born June 24, 1968 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of Joseph A. and Sandra K. Albright Lopez Sr.

She was a homemaker.  Angela enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, watching Nascar racing especially Jeff Gordon.  She enjoyed camping and fishing at the Skunk River and the Y Camp.  She was a Harley Davidson Motorcycle enthusiast.   Angela liked to talk with friends on the phone and she loved roses. She is survived by her mother and step father, Sandra and Louis “Butch” Fisher of Burlington. Her father Joseph A. Lopez Sr.  Three daughters, Amanda Vandel, Amber Sue Vandel and Alicia Nicole (Matt) Siefken all of Burlington.  Three brothers, Joseph Lopez of Heinzville, Georgia, Jeff (Brandie)Nelson of Burlington and John Estes of Anamosa, Iowa.  Nine grandchildren, Brennan, Rachel, DaShawn, Justine, Sophia, Lydia, Kaylee, Hallie and Jalen. Angela was preceded in death by one infant brother, Christopher. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the First Church of the Nazarene.  Pastor Terry Vance will officiate.  The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the Service.  Following the service a light meal will be served in the Edge at the church.  Following a private family gathering at Prugh’s cremation has been entrusted to our loving care.  A memorial has been established in memory of Angela Lopez. Obituaries Monday December 29th

Marjorie Smith, 94, passed away peacefully in her Fort Collins home December 22, 2014.  Born in Oakville, Iowa February 2, 1920 to Samuel and Susanna (Goss) Wykert, Marjorie was the youngest of six children.  Ethyl, John, Pearl, Ernest and Howard all preceded her in death.  On May 31, 1941 she was united in marriage to De Los Russell Smith. After De Los returned from serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, they made their home in Oakville and later in Burlington, Iowa where they raised their only daughter, Margaret. Margaret married Robert (Rob) Cieslicki in 1980, and they owned and operated Sunchase Tours Inc. in Fort Collins for 25 years.  In 1999, Marjorie and De Los relocated to be close to them.  De Los passed away in January 2001. Marjorie graduated from Columbus Junction High School in Columbus Junction, Iowa and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  She began her teaching career in a one-room school house close to the family farm near Oakville.  Later she worked as a teacher’s aide and office assistant at Sunnyside Elementary School in Burlington for twenty two years before retiring at age 72. She is survived by their loving daughter, Margaret and her husband Rob, sisters-in law Joan Smith Rice (John) and Jean Smith Nelson (the late Joseph), twelve nieces and nephews and their families.
