After spending the afternoon in West Liberty, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, made his way south to Mediapolis and tried the “Best Burger in Iowa” at the 61 Chop House.

Before he sat down for dinner we asked about the West Liberty Foods Landfill Free Celebration…

“The whole company has gone landfill free. None of the things that come in thats a waste product for them do they actually take to a landfill. Much of it, they will recycle or they have reduced the amount thats coming. In some cases, they will burn it (wastes) because it’s combustable and they use it to replace coal in some of the facilities that use coal in concrete manufacturing and other kinds of things”.

Northey also said that as far as he knows, it’s the only processing plant that has went “land fill free”.

He also really enjoyed his burger.

Hopefully it’s marked on your calendar, Donate Life Night is this Saturday at Community Field in Burlington.

It’s a night to honor the organ donations of 10-year-old Garrett Brockway who died earlier this year. It’s also a night to create awareness about much needed organ donations. If you’re already an organ donor, remember to bring your drivers license. You’ll be entered for a chance to win an I-pad.

Plenty of activities are planned for the night. There will be a drag racing car that kids can get their picture taken in, the bounce house will be there, there will be giveaways, and an unveiling of a banner for Garrett Brockway in the outfield.

Gates open at 5:30 and the game starts at 6:30.

Garrett Brockway saved 5 lives. A 14-year-old boy received his heart, another 14-year-old boy received his liver, a 43-year-old mother received his pancreas, a 28-year-old man that had been on dialysis for over five years received one of his kidneys, and a 65-year-old man received his other kidney. Garrett’s corneas improved vision for a 63-year-old grandmother of 13 and a 10-year-old girl. His tissues will help upwards of 100 people. A boy with chronic knee pain has received cartilage.

If you’re looking for a furry new friend, look no further than the Des Moines County Humane Society.

June is “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month” and all cat and kitten adoption fees are cut by $20. Co-President of the Board of Directors for the shelter, Kelly Taeger, says right now the shelter is overflowing with kittens..

“Spring seems to be the season for liters of kittens. It’s kind of a combination time of year with not spaying and neutering. We always have so many in the spring and summer”.

Many have wondered if the newly renovated shelter is a no-kill shelter..

“We can never be no-kill because we are the city’s pound. We try to make it as low-kill of a shelter as possible. Unfortunately, every now and then we’ll get very sick animals that come in or animals that are on the vicious side that we don’t feel comfortable adopting”.

Fees are $90 for dogs and usually $65 for cats- with the exception of this month. Those fees include a voucher for spay and neutering. The Humane Society is located at 2000 N. Roosevelt in Burlington. They are open from 3-6pm Monday through Friday, and 1-5pm on the weekends.

A 41-year-old man is being held on $5 million bail after police say he castrated a paraplegic during a dispute at an assisted living facility in Philadelphia.

Authorities say Edgar Bonilla is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and other counts in Monday night’s attack inside the Inglis Apartments at Elmwood. Lt. John Walker says Bonilla was visiting a female friend at the facility and that she apparently had some sort of dispute with the victim.

Walker says Bonilla was apparently trying to settle that dispute. The victim, Bonilla and the woman were all apparently friends.

Bonilla is in custody and it couldn’t immediately be determined if he had an attorney. The name of the victim wasn’t released, but he remains in critical condition at a hospital.

Former investigators of the TWA Flight 800 crash off Long Island are calling on the National Transportation Safety Board to re-examine the case.

The retired investigators claim that findings were “falsified.” A documentary on the subject is coming out in July.

The 1996 crash of the Paris-bound flight killed 230 people.

Initial speculation ranged from maintenance problems to a bomb and even a meteorite. Some critics theorized that a Navy missile accidentally brought down the jetliner.

The NTSB concluded that Flight 800 was destroyed by a center fuel tank explosion, probably caused by a spark from a short-circuit in the wiring.

The agency said Wednesday its four-year probe remains one of its “most detailed investigations.”

The board said it would review any petition it receives from the documentary’s producers.

FedEx’s quarter profit is down 45 percent from a year ago as customers trade down to less-expensive delivery options and the package delivery company restructures some parts of its business.

FedEx said Wednesday that it earned $303 million in the fourth quarter, down from $550 million a year ago.

Excluding restructuring costs and aircraft write-downs, FedEx’s profit would’ve been $2.13 per share. That’s much better than the $1.96 per share that analysts were expecting.

The company says it’s still being hurt by weak economic growth and customers choosing lower-rate international services. FedEx Express is cutting capacity between the U.S. and Asia.

A tentative Aug. 4 trial date has been set for an Ohio man accused of kidnapping three women and holding them in his home for about a decade.

Ariel Castro, with his wrists and ankles shackled, appeared in court in Cleveland for a brief hearing Wednesday.

As in previous court appearances, he kept his chin tucked in his chest. He answered “yes” and “no” to the judge’s questions about his understanding of the proceedings.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Michael Russo mentioned plea deal discussions raised by the defense last week. He asked that any plea deal that emerges be submitted by attorneys in writing.

The 52-year-old Castro faces another pretrial hearing June 26.

Also Wednesday, lawmakers in Columbus planned to discuss providing relief payments to the three women.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys in the George Zimmerman murder trial are about to move into the next phase of jury selection.

On Wednesday, lawyers from both sides will begin whittling down a group of 40 prospective jurors, selected over a little more than a week’s time, to a final group of six jurors and four alternates. In Florida, 12 jurors are required only for criminal trials involving capital cases, when the death penalty is being considered.

Twenty-seven of the 40 potential jurors are white, seven are black, three are mixed race and three are Hispanic. Twenty-four are women and 16 are men.

SPECIAL COVERAGE: ZIMMERMAN TRIAL

The racial and ethnic makeup of potential jurors is relevant, prosecutors say. They have have argued that Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer for his gated community in Sanford, Fla., profiled Trayvon Martin when he followed the black teen last year as Martin was walking back from a convenience store to the house of his father’s fiancee.

Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, fatally shot Martin a short time later following a confrontation that was partially captured on a 911 call.

The case prompted public outrage around the nation, with some accusing Sanford police of failing to investigate the shooting thoroughly from the beginning because of the 17-year-old Martin’s race and because he was from the Miami area.

Zimmerman, 29, is charged with second-degree murder. He is pleading not guilty, claiming self-defense.

The 40 potential jurors represent a cross-section of people from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds who have varying levels of familiarity with the case’s basic facts.

MEET THE POTENTIAL JURORS

Through an initial round of interviews that included questions focused on pretrial exposure to the case via the news media or other means, lawyers were able to find a group of potential jurors who said they could focus on testimony provided in the courtroom.

Included in the group is a white woman in her 20s who said she once “liked” a photograph of Martin on Facebook. Also making it to the next round is a white man in his 30s who said he thought Zimmerman “sounded like a concerned neighbor” when he initially encountered Martin.

Others expressed mixed feelings about the racial undertones of the case.

One was a middle-aged black man who said he thought Martin’s death was “typical” with the history of violence he’s noted against black men in America. In contrast, another middle-aged black man said he didn’t agree with the racial connotations attached to the shooting and the protests that were held after it. He called those actions, which involved the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, “saber-rattling.”

Another prospective juror in the pool is a Mexican national in his 40s who said he had little knowledge of the case, but wanted to serve on the jury as a means to serve his adopted country.

Judge Debra Nelson said attorneys for both the prosecution and the state would be allowed to ask much broader questions in the second round than they did in the first.

Each side has 10 preemptory challenges, also called strikes, which it can use to eliminate jurors. Attorneys for both sides have unlimited challenges for cause. Once the preemptory challenges are exhausted, the jurors who haven’t been eliminated for cause will form the final jury.

Nelson said last week that once pared down, the final jury would be sequestered throughout the trial to protect it from outside influence.

Four prospective jurors questioned Tuesday morning expressed no strong opinions about the case. They included a mixed-race man in his 50s, a mixed-race woman in her 20s, a white woman in her 20s and a black man in his 50s.

When asked what his impressions were about the case, the mixed-race man in his 50s said, “You had a family grieving for the loss of their son. You have another family grieving for the potential loss of their loved one to this process. You had supporters on both sides, and some people were very angry.”

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ Iowa boaters will need to follow new laws designed to
protect the state’s lakes and rivers from non-native aquatic species.

The Department of Natural Resources says that beginning July 1, it will be
illegal to transport any aquatic plants on water-related equipment. Boaters also
will be required to drain all water from boats and equipment before leaving a
body of water, then keep drain plugs removed or opened while transporting the
equipment.

Signs listing the rules will be posted at public access points.

The new laws and earlier regulations are aimed at preventing the spread of
creatures such as zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil.
