Police Release Details Concerning Fatal Henderson County Head-On Crash

Two Burlington men are dead after a two-car head-on collision on US-34 in rural Henderson County. At around 9:00 am on Thursday near Gladstone, a vehicle, driven by 23-year-old  Samuel Anthony Brown, was headed westbound on Highway 34, when his vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane for unknown reasons, according to Illinois State Police. Brown’s car moved directly in the path of an eastbound vehicle driven by 85-year-old Robert Alden Kemp. Kemp attempted to veer off the road in order to avoid the accident, but was unable to avoid being struck. Both drivers were pronounced dead on the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle. Officer Jesse Hill to Return to Active Duty this Friday

The Burlington Police Officer who accidentally shot and killed a woman while responding to a domestic dispute will return to duty this Friday. In a short news release, Police Chief Doug Beaird confirmed that Hill was approved to return to duty after several months of psychological evaluation. Hill has been on paid administrative leave since the January 6th shooting of Autumn Steele. Steele was shot as Hill was responding to a domestic dispute between Steele and her husband, Gabriel. Hill was attacked by the couples dog, and while attempting to shoot and kill the dog, fell backwards and accidentally shot Steele. Continue Reading

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation has released a 12 second video captured from Burlington Police Officer Jesse Hill’s body mounted camera on January 6th–the day that Hill shot Autumn Steele when responding to a domestic dispute. Soldiers Presumed Dead After Army Helicopter Crash in Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — A military official says the seven Marines and four soldiers aboard an Army helicopter that crashed over waters off Florida during a training mission are presumed dead. The Pentagon official said Wednesday that the 11 service members are presumed dead and that the Coast Guard found debris in the water. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to speak on the record. Andy Bourland, a spokesman for Elgin Air Force Base outside Pensacola, says the UH-60 Black Hawk from the Army National Guard was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and crews found debris around 2 a.m.

Three Dozen Mount Pleasant MHI Employees Get Layoff Notices

A state senator is accusing Governor Terry Branstad of creating a “constitutional crisis” in Iowa with his decision to close the state-run Mental Health Institutes in Clarinda and Mount Pleasant without legislators’ approval. Senator Rob Hogg , a Democrat from Cedar Rapids, says it’s time for the legislature “to stand up and assert itself.” Over three dozen employees at the Mount Pleasant M-H-I got layoff notices on Thursday. “Thirty-seven Iowans told this morning they’ve lost their jobs at a Mental Health Institute that Iowa law requires to be open and operated and apparently the governor doesn’t understand we live in a state that is governed by the law,” Hogg said, his voice rising in anger. Senator Brad Zaun, a Republican from Urbandale, says he wants to find a way to ensure acutely mentally ill Iowans are able to get adequate care, but he says anger isn’t the answer. Continue Reading
