Body of Missing Boater Found http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/25/body-of-missing-boater-found/ http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/25/body-of-missing-boater-found/#comments Mon, 25 May 2015 22:09:47 +0000 http://www.kbur.com/?p=53607 The body of a boater who was missing since his small boat went under the roller dam at Lock and Dam 18 on the Mississippi River north of Burlington on Sunday has been found.

The body of Christopher Corson, age 33, was found shortly before 11:30am Monday.

Corson and Anthony Zurmuehlen, age 30, both of Burlington, were fishing near Lock and Dam 18 when their boat was pulled under the dam, causing it to roll over. Zurmuehlen managed to stay alive by grabbing onto a log below the roller dam and working his way to the surface and, eventually, to shore, where he was found by a Department of Natural Resources Officer around 3:00pm. After being taken to Great River Medical Center, he was discharged without injury.

Neither man was wearing a life jacket.

The search for Courson was suspended Sunday evening as daylight waned. It picked back up at sunrise, and Courson was discovered a few hours later.

Montrose Landowner Alleges Pipeline Agent Offered Prostitute in Return for Land Rights http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/11/montrose-landowner-alleges-pipeline-agent-offered-prostitute-in-return-for-land-rights/ http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/11/montrose-landowner-alleges-pipeline-agent-offered-prostitute-in-return-for-land-rights/#comments Mon, 11 May 2015 17:36:04 +0000 http://www.kbur.com/?p=50960 A landowner from Montrose says he has recorded proof that a land agent for the proposed Bakken Pipeline offered to get him an 18-year-old prostitute if he’d grant access rights to his property so the pipeline may pass through. The company has not yet responded to the allegations. Hughie Tweedy of Montrose says he recorded two of his conversations with the land agent.

“On these recordings you will hear evidence of my senior pipeline representative offering me not once, not twice, but three times the sexual services of a woman,” Tweedy said, “the last time being a $1200 teenage prostitute.”

Tweedy held a news conference on the steps of the statehouse Monday to make the allegations. Tweedy told reporters he had planned to hand copies of the recordings to reporters, but his lawyer advised against it, since Tweedy may file a lawsuit against the company. But Tweedy says he’d turn the recordings over to the state’s attorney general if the Iowa Department of Justice plans to launch a criminal investigation of the company.

“If an old junkyard dog like me was offered the sexual services of little girls to get my hackles down, I wonder what was offered to the powerbrokers of this state to gain their support for silence,” Tweedy says. “Shame, shame, shame.”

Tweedy says he decided to go public with his allegations to spur legislators to pass a bill that would make it more difficult for the pipeline to seize property for the project. The bill is eligible for debate in the Iowa Senate. It would require the pipeline’s developers to pick up the legal tab for landowners who can’t afford to hire a lawyer to go over land lease contracts.

This month the pipeline company twice asked deputy sheriffs to accompany land surveyors to Tweedy’s property in Lee County and Tweedy says they told him it was because they’d heard his property had been “booby-trapped.” Tweedy calls it “intimidation”.

Messages left for a spokesperson for Energy Transfer Partners were not returned Monday.

Local Photography Studio Owner, Ex-Councilman Arrested; Allegedly Sexually Abused Customers http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/06/local-photography-studio-owner-ex-councilman-arrested-allegedly-sexually-abused-customers/ http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/06/local-photography-studio-owner-ex-councilman-arrested-allegedly-sexually-abused-customers/#comments Wed, 06 May 2015 21:53:56 +0000 http://www.kbur.com/?p=50474 Christopher King. The owner of a local photography studio was arrested Wednesday after police say he sexually molested several teenage customers.

40 year old Christopher Lee King, the owner of Daisy Frames Photography Studios in Downtown Burlington, is facing two charges of Sexual Abuse in the 3rd degree, and three counts of Providing Alcohol to a Minor. Several parents contacted Burlington Police in February, concerned that King had sexually abused their teenage daughters.

Police say that King, on multiple occasions, contacted teenage customers through social media following their initial sitting, offering them “discounts” on their photo sessions if they came to the studio to “assist” King. King would then, allegedly, provide the teenage girls with alcoholic beverages and drive to locations in rural Des Moines county, where according to police, he would expose his genitalia, fondle the victims and force them to “play” sexually oriented games.

Search warrants conducted on King’s home and business turned up items that police say corroborate with the victim’s reports. King was arrested at his home on Wednesday without incident.

He served on the Burlington City Council between 2002 and 2005.

Multiple victims have been identified and additional charges are pending.

6 Baltimore Police Officers Charged in Death of Freddie Gray http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/01/6-baltimore-police-officers-charged-in-death-of-freddie-gray/ http://www.kbur.com/2015/05/01/6-baltimore-police-officers-charged-in-death-of-freddie-gray/#comments Fri, 01 May 2015 15:30:51 +0000 http://www.kbur.com/?p=50002 BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s top prosecutor announced criminal charges Friday against all six officers suspended after a man suffered a fatal spinal injury in police custody. The announcement came after nearly two weeks of growing anger over Freddie Gray’s death, and only hours after she received the results of a police investigation.

State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby announced the stiffest charge — second-degree depraved heart murder — against the driver of the police van. Other officers faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, assault and illegal arrest.

Mosby said the switchblade officers accused Gray of illegally carrying clipped inside his pants pocket was in fact a legal knife, and no justification for his arrest.

“No one is above the law,” Mosby said at a news conference.

Intruder Alarm Triggers Lockdown, Evacuation at Dallas City Elementary School http://www.kbur.com/2015/04/16/intruder-alarm-triggers-lockdown-evacuation-at-dallas-city-elementary-school/ http://www.kbur.com/2015/04/16/intruder-alarm-triggers-lockdown-evacuation-at-dallas-city-elementary-school/#comments Thu, 16 Apr 2015 19:06:59 +0000 http://www.kbur.com/?p=48516 Illinois State Police Troopers, armed with assault rifles and bulletproof vests, guard the perimeter of Dallas City Elementary School on Thursday.

Illinois State Police Troopers, armed with assault rifles and bulletproof vests, guard the perimeter of Dallas City Elementary School on Thursday.

A report of an intruder triggered a massive police response, full scale evacuation, and a lockdown at Dallas City Elementary School in Dallas City, Illinois.

Pam Tate, a reading volunteer at the school, was inside the building when the intruder alarm was signaled at around 9:15 am.

“Over the loudspeaker they said ‘[intruder] in the school, lockdown’,” Tate told KBUR, “Once we got the kids all in one section [of the room] close to one of the windows, so that they could get out if they had to, the teacher barred all of the doors…and the kids each got one item, so that if something happened they could throw it at the intruder.”

Students were evacuated from the school, escorted in groups by policemen armed with assault rifles and bulletproof vests. Students were loaded from the school onto buses, holding their hands in the air as they approached. According to scanner reports, one teacher apparently had brought her students to her house close to the school when the alarm was triggered.

Hancock County Sheriff Scott Bentzinger says that armed police from at least five different agencies swept the building. It was determined that the building was clear and that there was no intruder inside.

Bentzinger told reporters, “There was an alarm activated from the school and law enforcement responded…law enforcement arrived, searched the building and found that everything was secure.”

It’s not clear who exactly signaled the intruder alarm, or if there was ever a threat in the first place.

There was a lot of intial confusion regarding the incident. Dallas City Elementary School officials were planning an armed intruder drill later this month, and had sent home a memo with children informing their parents of that drill. Many parents believed that the incident was that drill, but Superintendent Ryan Olson says that it was just an unfortunate coincidence.

“This was not a drill,” said Olson, “There was a report of an intruder in the building, so we activated our emergency response plan. Law enforcement was called, they searched and cleared the building. Students and staff followed the emergency response plan very well. At no time were they in any danger.”

Classes resumed just before 12:30 pm. Every single on duty State Trooper from Illinois State Police District 14 responded along with Sheriff’s deputies from Hancock and Henderson Counties, and police from as far away as Oquawka.

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has been found guilty of first-degree murder.

A Massachusetts jury on Wednesday found Hernandez killed Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013. Lloyd was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee. He was found shot six times in an industrial park less than a mile from Hernandez’s home.

At the time, Hernandez had a $40 million contract with the Patriots.

Hernandez’s lawyer acknowledged during closing arguments that he was there when Lloyd was killed. But he pinned the shooting on Hernandez’s two friends, saying his client was a 23-year-old kid who didn’t know what to do.

Prosecutors said Hernandez planned the killing and then helped cover it up.

The conviction carries a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
