Vernon Floyd Muntz died Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Great River Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa. He was born August 30, 1922 at Farmington, Iowa the son of Earl Otto and Olive Watts Muntz. On January 9, 1947 he married Charlotte Louise Smith in San Diego, California.
Vernon served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was a Machinist Tool & Die maker. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. Vernon was a graduate of Le Tourneau University receiving a bachelor’s degree as a tool maker. He was employed in various factories in Burlington, Iowa and retired from General Electric in 1987. During retirement years, he and his family traveled to national parks, museums and took tours in Mexico, Canada and went on many cruises. Survivors include his wife Charlotte of Burlington, one son Randy Muntz also of Burlington; one sister Pauline Varner of Ft. Madison, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Arvella Muntz and Maxine Kerr, one brother, Melvin Muntz and an infant son, Dennis. Funeral Services will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Terry Vance will officiate. Interment will be in Sharon Cemetery, Lee County, Iowa. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Patrick A. Duffy, age 70 of Morning Sun, died Tuesday December 3, 2013 at the MorningSunCareCenter. The son of Carl and Nina (Nichols) Duffy, he was born September 11, 1943 at Muscatine. He was a graduate of the MorningSunHigh School. He served for two years during the View Nam War in the US Army. He was an iron worker and retired from Hawkeye Group in Mediapolis. John Milton Genck, 84, of Donnellson, IA, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at 11:10 p.m. at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Fort Madison, IA to John T. & Tempy B. Hawkins Genck. He married Dolores H. Sheppard on April 30, 1949 in Fort Madison, IA. He was a conductor for the Santa Fe Railroad for 36 years and later worked at the Fort Madison Daily Democrat for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of Izaak Walton, the Model T of America Club & ILIAMO Model T Ford Club. He enjoyed collecting junk, antiques and tinkering. Vivian Corine Manka, 94, of FortMadison passed away November 25, 2013 at The Kensington. She was born on February 2, 1919 in Fort Madison, IA to Robert & Ruth Miller Breen. She married Robert Manka, Sr. on February 17, 1939 at Sacred Heart Rectory in FortMadison. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2004. Vivian began working at W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co. after graduating from high school at the age of 17, working there for over 25 years. She also designed windows at Kresge’s, P. M. Place, and Woolworth’s and also managed the men’s department at TG&Y. She enjoyed volunteering and was very active as Chairman of the Board for the King’s Daughter’s Home in Fort Madison, was a Camp Fire Girl troop leader for 10 years, a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, and up until recently gave a lot of time and support to Friends of the Library. She and Bob loved golf, ballroom dancing and square dancing and she was able to continue square dancing until about one year ago. Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline (William) Kurtt of Ahwahnee, CA, and Beverly (Gregg) Brockman of Fort Madison; two sons, Robert (Marta) Manka and Michael (Candace) Manka both of Fort Madison; 11 grandchildren, Brian (Denise) Kurtt of Melissa, TX, Bruce (Brenda) Kurtt of Fresno, CA, Bridget (Keith) DeJong, Montclair, CA, Sean (Gina) Manka, Castle Rock, CO, Kelly (Dan) Crooks, Fenton, MO, Ryan (Krystal) Manka, Cedar Rapids, IA, Samantha Manka and Alex Manka, both of Fort Madison, Nathan (Jodi) Brockman, Ames, IA, and Corinn (Jason) Hardy, Great Lakes, IL. Throughout his life, Jim had worked at the parking ramp at Burlington Medical Center, the Des Moines Register as a distributer, Deery Brothers as a driver, at a bank in Quincy, at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Bock’s Flower Shop, as a truck driver, and at Campbell Chain Co.
