Vivian Corine Manka, 94, of FortMadison passed away November 25, 2013 at The Kensington.  She was born on February 2, 1919 in Fort Madison, IA to Robert & Ruth Miller Breen.  She married Robert Manka, Sr. on February 17, 1939 at Sacred Heart Rectory in FortMadison.  He preceded her in death on May 1, 2004. Vivian began working at W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co. after graduating from high school at the age of 17, working there for over 25 years.  She also designed windows at Kresge’s, P. M. Place, and Woolworth’s and also managed the men’s department at TG&Y. She enjoyed volunteering and was very active as Chairman of the Board for the King’s Daughter’s Home in Fort Madison, was a Camp Fire Girl troop leader for 10 years, a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, and up until recently gave a lot of time and support to Friends of the Library.  She and Bob loved golf, ballroom dancing and square dancing and she was able to continue square dancing until about one year ago. Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline (William) Kurtt of Ahwahnee, CA, and Beverly (Gregg) Brockman of Fort Madison; two sons, Robert (Marta) Manka and Michael (Candace) Manka both of Fort Madison; 11 grandchildren, Brian (Denise) Kurtt of Melissa, TX, Bruce (Brenda) Kurtt of Fresno, CA, Bridget (Keith) DeJong, Montclair, CA, Sean (Gina) Manka, Castle Rock, CO, Kelly (Dan) Crooks, Fenton, MO, Ryan (Krystal) Manka, Cedar Rapids, IA, Samantha Manka and Alex Manka, both of Fort Madison, Nathan (Jodi) Brockman, Ames, IA, and Corinn (Jason) Hardy, Great Lakes, IL.  There are also 21 great grandchildren, Angela Shamblin, Melissa, TX, Katherine, Jack, & Caroline Kurtt, Fresno, CA, Willa DeJong, Montclair, CA, Kenzie & Kylie Carpenter, Castle Rock, CO, Sarah, Anna, Josiah, Lydia, Leah, Laura Beth, and Norah Crooks of Fenton, MO, Linkin Manka, Cedar Rapids, IA, Max, Emma, Zoe, and Zach Brockman of Ames, IA, and Carter and Addison Hardy of Great Lakes, IL.  She is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Davis and Betty Sallen.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, William & Gordon Breen and two sisters, Ruth Breen and Joanne Tweedy. 

       The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 with the funeral service to immediately follow at 10:30 a.m. all at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Jim Bell, 92, of Burlington, died at 1:10 PM Sunday, November 24, 2013, at his home.  

Born May 26, 1921, in Stoutsville, MO, he was the son of Herman William and Vivian R. Redman Bell. On February 26, 1945, he married Mildred Ethel Hart in Monroe City, MO.  

Throughout his life, Jim had worked at the parking ramp at Burlington Medical Center, the Des Moines Register as a distributer, Deery Brothers as a driver, at a bank in Quincy, at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Bock’s Flower Shop, as a truck driver, and at Campbell Chain Co.  He had retired from General Electric after 20 years. Garry Thomas, 56, of Burlington, died at 11:33 AM Sunday, November 24, 2013, at his home.  Arrangements are pending at the Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory. The funeral service for Mrs. Marian Anderson, 94, of New London, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 27th  at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Pastor James Roth will officiate with interment being held in BurgeCemetery, rural New London.  Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the New London Nursing and RehabCenter. Father John Whalen, 70, of Burlington, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday, November 24, 2013.

Irene Campbell, 88, of Burlington, died at 2:23 AM Thursday, November 21, 2013, at the Burlington Care Center in Burlington.  

Born August 8, 1925, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of George William and Goldie M. Hoskins Boyd. On September 12, 1953, she married Kenneth J. Campbell in Fort Madison.  

Irene worked as a hairdresser.

John William McCulley, Sr., age 88, of Mediapolis and formerly of Oakville, died Sunday, November 10, 2013, at the Klein Unit of Great River Medical Center in Burlington.  Born on May 11, 1925 in Grandview, Iowa, John was the oldest of seven boys and the son of Glen R. and Ruth Cockerill McCulley.  He walked two miles to attend Mount Hope and Indian Creek Country Schools. John was drafted into the US Navy in 1946. After his time in the service he graduated from American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, Iowa.  He married Betty L. Ball on April 16, 1949 in Wapello.  Together they founded Oakville Feed and Produce in 1951 which is now TriOak Foods. John served as a Director of Farmer and Merchants Bank and Trust for nearly 50 years and held the position of president of the Iowa Feed and Grain Association.  He served on the Oakville School Board and on the Oakville City Council.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 489 in Oakville for 64 years and was a member of the Wapello Lodge #5 A.F. & A.M.  He was a long time member of the Oakville United Methodist Church and served on the church board. Robert F. Carter, 77, of Fort Madison, IA, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 6:17 p.m. at the FortMadisonCommunityHospital.  He was born on February 14, 1936 to Robert F. & Ruby Belle Rowland Carter III.  He married Janis J. Worman on April 15, 1952 in Kahoka, MO.  He retired from the Iowa State Penitentiary with 38 years of service.  He was a member of Living Hope Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals.  He enjoyed telling jokes, singing, playing the guitar, lighthouses, watching old television shows and spending time with his family.  He always thought of others first and took great pride in taking care of his wife, Janis.        Bob is survived by: his wife: Janis Carter of Fort Madison, IA; 1-daughter: Candice Carter of Glenwood, IA; 4-sons: David (Emily) Carter of Quincy, IL, Steven (Monica) Carter of Fort Madison, IA, Greg Carter of Iowa City, IA & Jaydee Carter of Fort Madison, IA; 9-grandchildren; 9-great grandchildren & 1-brother: Jerry (Pat) Carter of Bettendorf, IA.  He was preceded in death by: his parents, 3-sisters & 5-brothers.        Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2013 with the family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory.  The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Living Hope Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Kyler Ray Schnedler, age 12 of Mediapolis, died Wednesday November 6, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  The son of Mathew and Alissa (Drebenstedt) Schnedler, he was born August 18, 2001 at Burlington.  He was a 6th grader at Mediapolis Schools.  He attended CornerstoneCommunityChurch in Mediapolis and was active in the 5:16 Youth Group.  He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing and was an avid artist.  Kyler gave the gift of life by being an organ donor.
