Helen Marie Perkins, 84, of West Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Klein Center, West Burlington, Iowa, on February 9, 2015.  

Born on October 15, 1930 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Edwin R. and Emma Bertha Keuhnle Johnson. She married Robert E. Grant and they later divorced. He died in 2008.  Helen married Dale Perkins on August 12, 1978 in Burlington; he died September 26, 1989.  

Helen worked at Burlington Medical Center in Medical Records for many years and retired from there. Continue Reading

Ruth Wischmeier, 82, of Burlington, died at 9:15 AM Saturday, February 7, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  

Born September 23, 1932, in Newport, IA, she was the daughter of Austin and Nellie Havenhill Hemphill. On August 13, 1950, she married Leonard Wischmeier at the Latty Church in Burlington.  

Ruth worked at Mitten Jewelry Store in Hotel Burlington and then for Law’s Jewelry in downtown Burlington and was a homemaker.

Obituaries Friday February 6th

Stanley Robert Flack, 58, of Ottumwa, died Thursday, February 05, 2015 surrounded by his family at Hospice of Davis and Wapello County in Ottumwa, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Visitation for Mr. Flack will begin after 9:00 AM, Sunday, February 8, 2015 at Elliott Chapel, New London and his family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Chapel.  There will be no Memorial Service.  According to his wishes, his body will be cremated following visitation and inurnment will be held at a later date.  A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers.  

Marvin Chester Meeker, 87, of Burlington, died at 11:10 PM Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at his home in rural Burlington from complications of Leukemia.  

Born January 31, 1928, in Pekin, IL, he was the son of Daniel Rodney and Hazel Williams Meeker. On April 5, 1953, he married Dolores Blanche Spanhut in Burlington. Continue Reading

Candy Lynn Almendinger, 56, of Burlington, died at 2:40 AM Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  

Born November 29, 1958, in Akron, OH, she was the daughter of Daniel Hale and Dora Maupin. On December 31, 1997, she married David Almendinger at the Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington.  

Candy was a homemaker and social worker for various companies.  

She graduated from Southeastern Community College before receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in psychology from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. Continue Reading

Sharon Lynn Snider, 64, West Burlington died Saturday 1/31 at the Great River Hospice House. She is survived by her husband Richard “Dick”, 2 sons, Jeremy Starman of Westerville, OH and Andrew Snider of Deerfield, FL, a sister, Nancy Reighard of Burlington and a brother, Jim Von Ende of Iowa City & 3 grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Friday 2/6 at Lunning Chapel.  

Robert “Bob” P. Ensminger, 87, of Middletown, died at 12:13 PM Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Eleanor Jeanne Kindig, 91, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015 in the Danville Care Center, Danville, Iowa. Born July 21, 1923 in Fort Madison, Iowa she was the daughter of Arthur Franklin and Nina Parson Davis.  On May 23, 1944 she married Robert Leroy Kindig in Burlington, Iowa.  He preceded her in death August 24, 1984. Obituaries Monday February 2nd

Dorothy Elizabeth Odle, age 87, of Wapello, died Sunday morning, February 1, 2015, at the Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center.  The daughter of Otto and Johanna Kuester Umlandt, she was born on June 10, 1927 in Muscatine.  Dorothy married Hilton B. Odle on May 31, 1953 in Muscatine.  He preceded her in death on December 18, 2009.  

Dorothy graduated from Muscatine High School and attended Muscatine Junior College to receive her teaching certificate.  In later years she received her four year degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant.  She was an elementary teacher first in Wapello and then later taught at both Lett’s and Grandview elementary schools and retired from teaching from L & M elementary school.  

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello, the T.O.P.S. 1118 in Wapello, the Wapello Study Club, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Louisa County Retired Teachers.  She enjoyed reading, needlepoint, and flower gardening.  

Her family includes a daughter, Terri & Kirk McElhinney of Johnson City, Texas; a son, Steve & Anita Odle of Wapello; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hilton; a son, KC; and an infant sister. Continue Reading

Obituaries Friday January 30th

Patricia Ann ‘Pat’ Parsons, age 86, of Wapello, died at her home Wednesday morning, January 28, 2015. The daughter of Clair and Hazel Stone Clark, she was born on March 15, 1928 at Columbus Junction.  She married Jack Parsons on August 23, 1947 at Columbus Junction.  He preceded her in death on July 28, 2005.  

She graduated from Columbus Community High School in 1946.  Patricia was an outstanding partner in the farming operation with Jack.  She participated in all phases of the operation.  Pat was the first woman in Iowa to get a Chemical Applicators license.  She traveled with Jack to Russia when he helped get a long term grain agreement negotiated.  Pat belonged to the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the National Corn Growers Association.  She was a 50+ year member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the Farm Bureau.  

She is survived by her daughter, Diane & Ed Vineyard of Wapello; two sons, Diane’s twin brother, Dave & Marla Parsons of Wapello and Gary & Bev Parsons of Wapello; seven grandchildren, Tanya Patzner, Elizabeth Vineyard, Valeria Vineyard, Trent Parsons, Kristen Svalstad, Todd Parsons, and Troy Parsons; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Smith of Burlington; a special friend, Bob Gabeline and his family; and her special pets and companions, Pork Chop and Tabby.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; and three brothers, Bob, Keith, and Loren Clark.  

The funeral ceremony for Pat Parsons will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.  Burial will follow at the Mallory Cemetery, rural Wapello. Continue Reading

Dorothy R. Grant, 91, of Burlington, died at 3:50 PM, Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.  

Born May 30, 1923, in Argentina, KS, she was the daughter of Eliseo and Ignacia Rodriguez Murguia.  On October 12, 1951, she married William T. Collins in Burlington.  They later divorced.  On July 7, 1973, she married Robert E. Grant in Burlington. He died January 1, 2008.  

Dorothy had worked at Van’s Lunch Box, J.S. Schramm Co., Riley Bros. Paint Co., and Credit Bureau of Burlington. Continue Reading
