US Women’s Soccer Team Beats Columbia, Burlington Beats Davenport Central

In the Women’s Soccer World Cup the United States Squad took down Columbia last night to advance in the tournament, winning 2-0 in the Round of 16. They’ll face the squad from China on Friday. Prep Softball, Burlington shut out Davenport Central in a Doubleheader winning 12-nothing and 17-nothing to improve to 14-11 on the year. 10th ranked Wapello beat Louisa-Muscatine 13-4. Cyclones Introduce New Coach

The Iowa State Cyclones have a new basketball coach. Steve Prohm, who comes to ISU from Murray State University, replaces Fred Hoiburg, who left the Cyclones to become the new head coach for the Chicago Bulls. Two local teams met their season end last night in the Girls Regional Soccer Finals as Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville was shut out by North Scott, 8-0 and Holy Trinity lost to Regina, 5-1. Prep Softball, Burlington High School took down Muscatine in a doubleheader, winning 2-1 and 7-2. West Burlington-Notre Dame over Van Buren, 11-1. Continue Reading

Blackhawks, Danville-New London Win

The Chicago Blackhawks rallied back to take game one of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Tampa Bay lightning, 2-1 last night thanks to two goals in under two minutes in the third period. They play again on Saturday. In Prep Soccer, Danville-New London stamped their ticket to the state tournament with a win over Columbus, 5-0, in the class 1A substate finals last night. The bears are the 8th seed for the tournament, and face the number one seed, Dyersville Beckman, in the very first round of the tournament. In Prep Soccer, Notre Dame’s Girls topped Keokuk 4-2 in the class 2A regional Semifinal. Holy Trinity took down Mediapolis in the class 1A regional semifinal, 7-0. Hoiburg Introduced as Head Coach of Chicago Bulls

Iowa State head basketball coach Fred Hoiburg, who brought his team to the NCAA tournament four times in a row, is leaving Ames to take up a new role: the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Hoiburg replaces Tom Thibodeau, who was fired last week after five seasons with the team. Chicago fell this year to Cleveland in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Burlington Bees fell in the last game of a four game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits, losing 4-2 in Midwest League play at Community Field.
