West Burlington Softball Season Comes to an End

The West Burlington Notre Dame softball team had their season come to an end last night as they fell to 11th ranked West Liberty in the class 3A regional Quarterfinal, 3-1. They finish their season at 22-14. New London routed Keota 13-0 in Class 1A off a no hitter by Morgan Christner. 9th ranked Wapello beat Lisbon, 7-3. Mid Prairie over Central Lee, 12-0. Sports for 7/8/15

In the Class 2A Softball Regional it was Pekin routing Danville 12-0 in the opening round of the tournament. In Class 1A play it was Van Buren over Winfield-Mount Union 15-3. In nonconference play it was Washington over Central Lee, 5-2. Baseball Action saw Clinton taking a Double Header with Burlington, 3-0 and 2-1. West Burlington beat Wapello 12-1. Continue Reading

Greyhounds Almost Win, McIlRoy Injures Ankle

The Burlington Greyhounds Softball Team didn’t get to finish a game against Bettendorf last night, but it was looking good. The game was called off while the Greyhounds were up 5-3. It won’t be made up. In baseball action the Mediapolis squad took down Notre Dame, 3-Mediapolis actually scored four more runs at the top of the sixth when the game was called for rain, only counting the last full inning played. US Women’s Soccer Team Beats Japan, Wins World Cup

The US Women’s Soccer Team won the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1999 last night as they took on Japan. The US got off to a 4-0 lead in the first 20 minutes thanks in part to an early hat trick from Carli Lloyd–she was named player of the tournament. US Goalkeeper Hope Solo was given the Golden Glove for the second straight time. Final score was 5-2. Burlington Bees fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Midwest League Play, 9-6. Continue Reading

US Women’s Soccer Team Beats Columbia, Burlington Beats Davenport Central

In the Women’s Soccer World Cup the United States Squad took down Columbia last night to advance in the tournament, winning 2-0 in the Round of 16. They’ll face the squad from China on Friday. Prep Softball, Burlington shut out Davenport Central in a Doubleheader winning 12-nothing and 17-nothing to improve to 14-11 on the year. 10th ranked Wapello beat Louisa-Muscatine 13-4. Spieth is the Sixth Ever to Win US Open, Masters in Same Year

Jordan Spieth took home the title at this weekend’s US Open in Washington State. He birdied the final hole to become only the sixth player in history to win both the US Open and the Masters in the same year. Erik Jones took home the checkered flag in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Atticat 300 at Chicagoland Speedway last night. His victory in Chicago comes just after a win here in Iowa, where he took home the checkered flag during a truck race in Newton. Burlington Bees dropped a game to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 3-1. Warriors Beat Cavaliers in NBA Finals, Cardinals Under Investigation

The Golden State Warriors won their first championship in 40 years as they beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-97 in Game Six of the NBA Finals last night. The Cavs remain without ever winning a championship and the City’s Championship drought will likely extend to 52 years. The St. Louis Cardinals are in the spotlight, and not in a good way. Federal Law Enforcement Authorities are investigating the team to determine whether they hacked into the Houston Astro’s computer database to obtain information on players. Continue Reading

Blackhawks Win Stanley Cup, WB Beats Danville at Superconference

The Chicago Blackhawks are Stanley Cup champions for the third time in five years. They beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 in the 6th game of the Stanley Cup finals to win the cup on their home ice–the first time they’ve been home for a championship win in 77 years. Prep baseball action West Burlington beat Danville, 5-4 in the SEI Superconference. Greyhounds Sweep Fort Madison, Mount Pleasant Sees Success

Burlington Greyhounds Softball swept Fort Madison in a doubleheader to keep the team’s 8 game win streak alive, winning 5-3 and 11-7 respectively. Other softball action it was Mount Pleasant taking three games in the Davis County Softball Tournament, beating Davis County 10-1, 7th ranked Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 4-3, and Albia, 10-3. New London suffered it’s first loss of the season during that tournament to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 4-2, but the Tigers bounced back to beat Albia 12-1 and Davis County 13-6. Central Lee fell to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 12-0, to Davis County 8-5 and to Albia, 17-5. In non-tournament Softballl Wapello over Lone Tree 11-2, Mediapolis blanked Wapello 19-0.
