Bandits Outscore Bees; SCC Season Over

The Burlington Bees and Quad Cities River Bandits slugged it out last(Tues) night at Community Field, but in the end the Bandits scored last to beat the Bees 10-9. Burlington begins a 3-game series at Peoria tonight, and that’ll be followed by three more on the road at Cedar Rapids.   You can hear all the action, beginning tonight at 6:10, on KBUR.  

In college baseball, SCC was eliminated from the NJC-double-A, Division-2 World Series yesterday by Mesa, Arizona.  The Blackhawks end their season at 45-21; that’s a new school record for wins.

Bees Win as Fish Catches Big One

Michael Fish’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning…his second homer of the game…gave the Burlington Bees a 7-5 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits yesterday(Mon) at Community Field. The two teams will play again tonight in Burlington and you can hear all the action on KBUR, beginning at 6:10.  

 

In college baseball, the SCC Blackhawks were shut out by Madison(WI) College in the second round of the NJCAA, Division-2 World Series.   SCC will play again today at 3:30 against Mesa, Arizona. If they lose this afternoon, the Blackhawks are out of it…but if they win, they’ll play again Thursday night.  

 

It’s tournament time(substate quarterfinals) for Iowa boys soccer and here are some of the games tonight:

Local Teams Second, Fourth, Fifth in State Track & Field

The West Burlington-Notre Dame boys track & field team placed second at state in Class 2A.  

Fort Madison’s boys tied for 5th in 3A…(WACO tied for 10th in 1A.) Among the girls, Mt. Pleasant finished second in 3A. In Illinois, the Illini West girls came in 4th in 1A. The Burlington Bees beat the Peoria Chiefs 4-3 and they’ll play again this(Sun) afternoon at 2 at Community Field. Continue Reading

Bees Lose to Chiefs; Maldonado Gold at State Track & Field Meet

The Burlington Bees lost to the Peoria Chiefs 4-3 at Community Field last night, even though both starting pitchers dominated the hitters for the first six innings. The Bees’ Clint Sharp had allowed just two hits and two runs, but only one of them earned…and the Chiefs’ Rob Kaminsky had eight strikeouts and allowed only one hit.   The Bees scored three runs in the 8th inning but the Chiefs answered with two in the 9th, to win it.   The two teams will play again tonight and tomorrow night in Burlington and you can hear both games on KBUR.  

 

At the Iowa State Track & Field Meet in Des Moines, Fort Madison’s Jeremy Maldonado won the Class 3A 400-meter dash…Mt. Pleasant’s Mary Wester finished second in the 3A discus…Mt. Pleasant’s Ben Canby placed third in the boys 3A discus…the Panthers’ Dustin Amos came in second in the 3A high-jump…WB-ND’s Xavior Williams came in third in the 2A long jump…teammate Logan Hoschek placed 8th in the 3200-meter run…L-M’s Jeshua van Sickle earned a 6th place in the 2A long jump…and Burlington’s 4 by 800 relay team had its best time of the season, but only managed a 21st in the Class 4A boys meet.  

 

 

In girls tennis, ND-WB’s Stephanie Wills earned a trip to state, with a second place in singles at the University of Iowa…..and in boys golf, New London’s Tristan Kadel and Hagin Gillis placed second and third, respectively, in a Class 1A boys district meet. Continue Reading

No Power, No Game in D-port

The Burlington Bees and Quad Cities River Bandits were not able to complete their game at Modern Woodmen Park on the Davenport riverfront last night. The power went out during the 7th inning with the teams tied at four, so the game was suspended until the next time the Bees and Bandits play in Burlington, early next week.   Meanwhile, the Bees are back home tonight, to begin a 3-game series with the Peoria Chiefs.   You can hear all the action on KBUR. On the high school sports schedule today, the Iowa state track & field meet gets underway in Des Moines with a number of local competitors taking part. The Illinois girls state track & field meet also begins today, as does the Iowa girls tennis individual regionals.

Bees Bust Bandits, Play Again Today

The Burlington Bees beat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-4 last night in Davenport, on a 12th inning single by Eric Aguilera and another RBI single by Brandon Bayardi. 

The two teams play again this morning at 11 at Modern Woodmen Park.   Aguilera, by the way, has been named the Midwest League’s Player-of-the-week .

The New London and Winfield-Mt. Union girls finished one-two in the Class 1A first-round regionals, so both advance to the regional finals on the 27th. Danville was 4th and Holy Trinity placed 6th.   Individually, W-MU’s Grace Edwards medaled and New London’s Emma Pry, Morgan Oliver, Paetyn Prottsman and Jorgi Krieger also advance. Continue Reading

Bees 3-Game Winning Streak Broken by Hard-Luck Kernels

The Cedar Rapids Kernels broke their 8-game losing streak yesterday, at the expense of the Burlington Bees. The Kernels overcame a 3-run deficit and defeated the Bees on Community Basket Day, 7-6.   Burlington travels to Davenport to face the Quad-Cities River Bandits tonight at 7 and you can hear the game on KBUR, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:40.   

The SCC baseball team is headed to Enid, Oklahoma and the NJCAA, Division-2 World Series for the first time in two decades.   The Blackhawks are now 44-20…that ties a school record for wins in a season…after beating Southeast Nebraska Community College 9-4 yesterday in the North Plains District championship game in Burlington.  

 

In high school baseball, it’s the Illinois Class 1A quarterfinals, with West Central at United at 4:30…in 2A, it’s West Hancock at Macomb at 4:30…and Illini West hosts South Fulton.  

In girls high school golf, the Iowa regional first-round tournaments get underway.  

And former BHS track star Khanishah Williams…now at junior at Iowa…won the Big-10 championship in the high jump. Continue Reading

Bees Win 3rd Straight, Prepare for Community Basket Day

The Burlington Bees won their third straight last night, 7-2 over the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  

Today, of course, is Community Basket Day at Community Field and the Bees and Kernels play at 2 o’clock, with Cedar Rapids now trying to break an 8-game losing streak. You can hear all the action on KBUR, beginning at 1:40.  
The SCC baseball team is one win away from a trip to the NJC-double-A World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. About 2 o’clock this afternoon, the Blackhawks will play the winner of this morning’s Southeast Nebraska Community College versus Dakota County Tech game. Continue Reading
