SCC Basketballers Named to All-Region Team, Nebraska and Penn State Duel to Face Hawkeyes

SCC Basketball may be over, but some players are still celebrating. Several SCC players on both the Women’s and Men’s squads were named to the all-region team on Tuesday. Women’s players included Champale Grays on the first team, Tatiana Nikitina and Selina Barnes on the second team, and Emily Soy and Andrekia Thompson on the third team. On the men’s squad it was Josh Ross who took top honors, folllowed by Isiah Graves, Steven Soukup, and Sam McDaniel. In College Basketball tonight, Nebraska and Penn State duke it out to determine who faces the Iowa Hawkeyes tomorrow in the second round of the Big 10 Conference Tournament. Continue Reading

Danville Boys Make Semifinals, Notre Dame, Mediapolis Girls Named to All-State Team

The Danville Boys Basketball team continued their hot streak through the first game of the Class 1A Championship tournament last night as the undefeated Bears took down West Hancock 69-47. With the win, they take on Maple Valley during the semifinals on Thursday. Two Southeast Iowa Girls Basketball players were named to the All-State Team yesterday. Notre Dame Guard Taylor Hickey was selected for Class 1A, and Mediapolis Forward Andrea Larson to the Class 3A team. Undefeated Danville Trying for State Championship, UNI Hoists Trophy Over Illinois State

The Danville Boys Basketball team is headed back to the state championship this afternon. The second-seeded AND undefeated Bears will take on 7th seeded West Hancock today in Des Moines. On the college level the University of Northern Iowa’s Men’s Basketball Team are Missouri Valley Conference Champions after a comeback victory over Illinois State. The Panthers came back from a 36-22 halftime deficit with a 25-4 scoring run that left the Redbirds in the dust. In the NBA, the Chicago Bulls fell to the San Antonio Spurs 116-105. Continue Reading

Newell-Fonda Upsets Notre Dame, SE Iowa Title Hopes Lie With Mediapolis

The top-ranked Notre Dame Nike Girls suffered a season ending loss in an upset against 7th ranked Newell-Fonda last night in the class 1A state Semifinals. The Nikes finished the game 63-56 after starting the game with a 13 point lead. But a loss for the Nikes doesn’t mean Southeast Iowa’s championship hopes are dashed. Mediapolis Girls Advance, Notre Dame to Play Newell-Fonda Tonight

The top-ranked Mediapolis Girls Basketball team took down Mount Vernon last night in the Class 3A state quarterfinals. The Bullettes trailed at halftime before surging in the second half to remain undefeated, 63-53. More Girls Basketball action tonight, the Notre Dame Nike Girls take on Newell-Fonda in Des Moines for the Class 1A State Semifinal. Notre Dame Girls Win, Will Play Newell-Fonda Wednesday

The Notre Dame Girls Basketball team rallied past Central Lyon on a game heard on KBUR last night. The Nikes 78-60 victory means they’ll be facing Newell-Fonda–the team they played in the final game of last year–on Wednesday. Victory escaped the grasp of the Fort Madison boys squad in the class 3A Substate final. They fell to Williamsburg in ovetime, 65-64. Nike Girls Prepare for State Title Run

The Notre Dame Nike Girls begin their battle for the Class 1A State Tournament tonight as they take on Central Lyon during the quarterfinals in Des Moines.  

The Nikes are 23-1 going into the tournament against an 18-6 squad from Central Lyon. It’s the third straight state trip for the team, who hopes to defend their state title. On the Boys court tonight, Fort Madison takes on Williamsburg in the Class 3A Substate Final in Muscatine. On the College Level, the Iowa State Men will take on Oklahoma tonight at home. West Hancock Beats Illini West, Mt. Pleasant Takes Fifth

In prep basketball, West Hancock overpowered Illini West on the Illinois side of the River 59-49. In prep bowling, Mount Pleasant’s squad took fifth in the state class 2A tournament with a loss against Fort Dodge by around 300 pins. Lots of action on the college courts last night with the Iowa Hawkeyes holding off Illinois 68-60. Northern Iowa took down Evansville 68-57, and Iowa State fell to Baylor after Baylor players shot seven consecutive three point shots, ending the game 79-70. Mediapolis, Keokuk Wrestlers See Success, West Burlington Beats Notre Dame

Wrestling:

Mediapolis is on top of the State Wresting 2A Championships. Mediapolis has 21 points to put them in first in the Class 2A Bracket. In an upset, 2nd ranked Mediapolis wrestler Cole Erickson lost to Dubuque Wahlert’s Andrew Turner during a quick, last second pin. Burlington’s Garret Grimshaw. Burlington won 2 of it’s five matches on the first day, and still has two wrestlers in the contest. Continue Reading
