Nikes Coach Stepping Down, MHI Layoff to Blame

The coach of the Notre Dame Nikes squad who won a state championship last year has stepped down from his position. Kollin Alfred also works at the Mount Pleasant MHI–or, at least, he did; he’s been laid off due to pending closure. Job uncertainty, he says, motivated him to give up the job he’s held for eight seasons. Alfred brought the team to three back-to-back state tournaments. NFL Owners Deny Replay Proposals, Sox, Cubs Fall in Spring Training

A group of NFL owners shot down a number of possible rule changes regarding the use of replays in the NFL. Proposals included increasing the number of coach’s challenges from one to three, replay reviews of personal fouls, and one particular proposal that would have allowed nearly any play on the field be subject to review. They did approve several safety proposals, including stopping play when a medical advisor determines that a player is unstable and needs to be taken off the field. In Spring training baseball, White Sox fell to the Colorado Rockies, 7-6–they play Kansas City tonight, Cubs lost to Oakland, 14-2–they take on Seattle tonight. St Louis plays Washington tonight. Iowa Wrestlers in Trouble, Butler Back For Bulls

Three University of Iowa Wrestlers are in hot water after being arrested last week. Freshmen Seth Gross, Ross Lembeck, and Logan Ryan are all indefinitely suspended by the team, having been arrested for theft on March 18th. Lembeck was charged with Drunken Driving, Gross was charged with having an open container of alcohol in the car. All three were underage. Heartbreak: Cyclones Upset by UAB

It was nothing short of tragic for the Iowa State Cyclones yesterday as the 3rd ranked Cyclones fell to the 14th ranked University of Alabama Birmingham in the very first round of the NCAA finals–by just one point. 60-59. The loss devastated brackets across the area. But they could be saved tonight: the 7th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes face off against Davidson tonight and the 5th ranked UNI Panthers take on Wyoming in the Eastern Bracket. All Three Iowa College Teams in NCAA Final Four Tournament

All three Iowa College teams are in the 68 team Final Four Tournament Bracket. Both Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa will be playing second round games this Friday, and the Hawkeyes could end up facing the Iowa State Cyclones in the Semifinals next week in Houston. The Final Four Tournament officially tips off on Thursday. In NASCAR Kevin Harvick took the Checkered Flag yesterday at the Campingworld.com 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Danville’s Hopes Dashed with Buzzer Beater, Hawkeyes Lose, Cyclones Win

It was a last second buzzer beater from Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto’s Shawn Flanigan that put the nail in the coffin for Danville High School’s championship run. The Bears lost in the semifinals by just one basket–59 to 57. The loss means that MVAO will face number 1 ranked Gladstone-Reinbeck in todays 3A championship game. Disappointment as well on the college court yesterday as the Iowa Hawkeyes lost to Penn State in the second round of the Big 10 Tournament 67-58. Judgment Day for Danville, Hawkeye Men

It’s judgment day for the Danville High School Boys Basketball Team as they take on Maple Valley-Athon-Oto in the State Class 1A Semifinals today in Des Moines. Danville is undefeated on the season, if they pull out ahead today they face the winner of Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Earlham tomorrow for the state final game. The Iowa Hawkeye Men take the court tonight in the second round of the Big 10 tournament. They face Penn State at 1:30 this afternoon. Kurt Busch has been welcomed back into the NASCAR fold after the organization suspending him following a ruling by a Delaware Judge that the 2004 Champion likely assaulted his ex girlfriend in September. SCC Basketballers Named to All-Region Team, Nebraska and Penn State Duel to Face Hawkeyes

SCC Basketball may be over, but some players are still celebrating. Several SCC players on both the Women’s and Men’s squads were named to the all-region team on Tuesday. Women’s players included Champale Grays on the first team, Tatiana Nikitina and Selina Barnes on the second team, and Emily Soy and Andrekia Thompson on the third team. On the men’s squad it was Josh Ross who took top honors, folllowed by Isiah Graves, Steven Soukup, and Sam McDaniel. In College Basketball tonight, Nebraska and Penn State duke it out to determine who faces the Iowa Hawkeyes tomorrow in the second round of the Big 10 Conference Tournament. Continue Reading

Danville Boys Make Semifinals, Notre Dame, Mediapolis Girls Named to All-State Team

The Danville Boys Basketball team continued their hot streak through the first game of the Class 1A Championship tournament last night as the undefeated Bears took down West Hancock 69-47. With the win, they take on Maple Valley during the semifinals on Thursday. Two Southeast Iowa Girls Basketball players were named to the All-State Team yesterday. Notre Dame Guard Taylor Hickey was selected for Class 1A, and Mediapolis Forward Andrea Larson to the Class 3A team. In the NBA the still-Derrick-Rose-less Bulls fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 101-91 last night. Continue Reading
