Wisconsin Wins NCAA Tournament

Not many expected Wisconsin to get as far as they did, but the Badgers nevertheless lost in the Championship round of the NCAA Tournament last night. The Duke Blue Devils, led by freshmen Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor, outscored Wisconsin 68-63 in Indianapolis last night. Burlington High School’s football team has a new coach. Zach Shay comes to Burlington from Augustana College, where he worked as a defensive coordinator. He replaces John Flaherty after nine seasons with the Greyhounds. Continue Reading

BHS Alum Drafted by Pro Softball Team

A Burlington High School Alum has been drafted into the nations only professional softball league. Miranda Kramer, a recent Western Kentucky University graduate and pitcher, was picked sixth overall in the National Pro Softball League draft in Nashville, Tennessee. She was picked by the Pennsylvania Rebellion, one of the leagues five teams.

She will finish up the season at Western Kentucky before making a decision whether or not to sign a contract with the Rebellion. Continue Reading

Final Four Tournament Kicks Off Saturday

The Final Four plays Saturday to determine which two teams will advance to the final round of the NCAA tournament. Michigan State and Duke start things off at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis at 5:06pm. Wisconsin and undefeated Kentucky tip off at 7:49. In SCC Softball the Blackhawks split a doubleheader against the Muscatine Cardinals, winning 6-2 before losing 14-6. Spring Training baseball, the Cubs beat Milwaukee 11-7, White Sox in a Split Series beat Seattle 12-4 but lost to San Diego 8-2, Cardinals beat the Mets 5-4 and the Royals tied with the Dodgers 4-4. Mount Pleasant Girls Finish Strong, ND-WB Tennis Sees Success

Mount Pleasant’s Girls Track Athletes took home the top spot at the Lady Falcon Relays in West Burlington. The Panthers took first in 11 events, , to win the class A division by more than 100 points. The Notre Dame-West Burlington Tennis Team saw success last night in their season opener, downing Keokuk 8-1. In NASCAR Ryan Newman’s racing team, Richard Childress Racing, was peanalized by the association for apparently illegally manipulating Newman’s tires at the Auto Club Speedway in California. Newman and his team were docked 75 points each in standings, dropping Newman from 6th to 27th overall. Continue Reading

West Burlington-Notre Dame Boys Take Home Track Victory, Cubs Won’t Start Bryant

West Burlington-Notre Dame’s Track Atheletes had a banner day at their home track meet last night. The Falcons won the class A team title with 175 points, and shattered two school records: Timmy Williams, Brant Wrede, Isaiah Trousil, and Xavior Williams beat the school record in 4×200 relay, winning in 1 minute, 31.44 seconds, and the 4×100 relayin 43.22 seconds. The Chicago Cubs have annunced that they’ll be starting their season without top 3rd base prospect Kris Bryant. Despite a strong spring training season, Bryant has been struggling with right shoulder soreness, and was delegated to the Triple A Iowa Cubs for an indetermininate amount of time. Final Four Decided, Hamlin Takes Checkered Flag

The final four has been decided: Michigan State, Duke, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. Michigan State and Duke won their spots last night. With Michigan State beating Louisville 76-70 in overtime and Duke beating Gonzaga 66-52. Denny Hamlin took home the checkered flag during Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup STP 500 in Martinsville, Virginia. He passed teammate Matt Kenseth with 28 laps to go for his fifth victory on the track. Continue Reading

Nikes Coach Stepping Down, MHI Layoff to Blame

The coach of the Notre Dame Nikes squad who won a state championship last year has stepped down from his position. Kollin Alfred also works at the Mount Pleasant MHI–or, at least, he did; he’s been laid off due to pending closure. Job uncertainty, he says, motivated him to give up the job he’s held for eight seasons. Alfred brought the team to three back-to-back state tournaments. NFL Owners Deny Replay Proposals, Sox, Cubs Fall in Spring Training

A group of NFL owners shot down a number of possible rule changes regarding the use of replays in the NFL. Proposals included increasing the number of coach’s challenges from one to three, replay reviews of personal fouls, and one particular proposal that would have allowed nearly any play on the field be subject to review. They did approve several safety proposals, including stopping play when a medical advisor determines that a player is unstable and needs to be taken off the field. In Spring training baseball, White Sox fell to the Colorado Rockies, 7-6–they play Kansas City tonight, Cubs lost to Oakland, 14-2–they take on Seattle tonight. St Louis plays Washington tonight.
