A REPORT IN THE HAWK EYE…A LOCAL NEWSPAPER…SAYS NEVA HOOVER WAS RE-INSTATED TO HER ASSOCIATE’S POSITION AT CORSE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AFTER WINNING A SO-CALLED “WHISTLEBLOWER” SUIT IN DES MOINES COUNTY COURT. SHE HAD ALSO FILED A GRIEVANCE WITH THE TEACHERS UNION FOLLOWING HER DISMISSAL, WHICH CAME AFTER SHE REPORTED THE ATTACKS TO SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND THEN NOTIFIED BURLINGTON POLICE WHEN HER SUPERIORS DIDN’T RESPOND. N.London Girl Killed When SUV Hits Implement

A NEW LONDON TEEN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE VICTIM OF A FATAL ACCIDENT SATURDAY NITE ON HIWAY-34, NEAR JIMTOWN ROAD. EMMA RITCHEY WAS KILLED WHEN THE SUV HER MOTHER WAS DRIVING REAR-ENDED AN AUGER BEING PULLED BY A WESTBOUND TRACTOR. DES MOINES COUNTY DEPUTIES SAY RITCHEY WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD SHORTLY AFTER THE CRASH…BONNIE COOPER WAS INJURED, BUT NOT BADLY ENOUGH TO BE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL…AND THE MAN DRIVING THE TRACTOR, DAN BURNETT OF ILLINOIS, WAS NOT HURT. THE IOWA STATE PATROL IS HELPING OUT WITH THE INVESTIGATION.

Port of Burlington’s New “Eco-Friendly” Feature

The Port of Burlington is “going green” thanks to Alliant Energy and the Burlington Renewable Energy Committee. The committee installed a solar photovoltiac system on the roof of the Port which supplies some, but not all, of the energy needed to run the building. The new system also features a display inside the Port that shows how much energy the system is generating, which was provided by a $2,650 grant from Alliant. Alliant Energy is working to bring awareness about the benifits solar energy can have on the Burlington Community. Continue Reading

THE BURLINGTON BEES CLOSED OUT THEIR SERIES IN CLINTON LAST NITE, BEATING THE LUMBERKINGS 6 TO 2 AT ASHFORD UNIVERSITY FIELD.  THE BEES ARE IDLE TODAY, AND WILL BE HOME TO FACE THE KANE COUNTY COUGARS TOMORROW NITE AT COMMUNITY FIELD.   YOU CAN HEAR ALL THE ACTION ON KBUR WITH BRANDON MARCUS.  

 

THE BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER TEAM LOST TO NORTH SCOTT 5 TO NOTHING LAST NITE IN A 2A REGIONAL SEMIFINAL GAME IN ELDRIDGE.  THE GRAYHOUNDS END THEIR SEASON AT 8 AND 9, AND JUST A GAME AWAY FROM A STATE TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE.

Russian Air-Defense Missiles Arrive in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) _ Syria’s government reportedly has received the first shipment of
long-range air defense missiles from Russia. 
 
Syrian President Bashar Assad confirmed the shipment on Hezbollah TV.  
 Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Syria in recent months that are
believed to have destroyed weapons shipments bound for Hezbollah.  
 Israel said earlier this week that it was prepared to use force to stop more

Iowa’s Federal Disaster Request

Iowa Congressman Dave Lobesack is calling on the President to approve the federal disaster request for 19 Iowa counties, several of them in this area. Governor Branstad says he’s still awaiting an answer from Washington on his request for Des Moines, Lee, Van Buren, Muscatine, Keokuk, Wapello, and 13 other counties to be declared “disasters” from the severe weather and flooding last month. The White House earlier this week declared Illinois counties federal disaster areas.  Among them in our area, were Henderson and McDonough. Warren County applied but didn’t make the cut.
