Helen Burdette Roach, 96, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday morning, October 8, 2013.

    

Born on January 10, 1917 in New London, Missouri, she was the daughter of Herbert T. and Laura King Birditt. She married Willie Roach on June 23, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on February 12, 1990.

    

Helen worked at the IAAP for ten years, Des Moines County Home for nine years and Schramm’s for nineteen years. She was lifetime member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, a member of Order of Eastern Star and St. Elmo Chapter #3, where she was past Worthy Matron. Helen enjoyed volunteering for the community in both the “Share Iowa” and Teddy Bear Picnics programs. She also served on the City Planning Commission and The League of Women’s Voters for a number of years. She received the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1995 from Gov. Terry Branstad.

 

She is survived by one son, William Samuel (Mary) Roach of Topeka, Kansas; three daughters, Cynthia Dianne Eaves of Burlington, Iowa, Laura Alice Baker of West Burlington, Iowa and Tamarra Sue (Robert) Washington of Burlington, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one sister, LaVeine Birditt of Peoria, Illinois.

    

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

    

Funeral services for Helen Burdette Roach will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Prugh Funeral Service, Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Robin Barrow, current pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

   

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Friends may call on Friday in Prugh’s Chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.

Lewis “Sam” Schnellbacher, 81, of Mediapolis, formerly of Burlington, died at 7:40 PM Monday, October 7, 2013, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

 

Born April 26, 1932, in Quincy, IL, he was the son of Albert John and Esther Schaffer Schnellbacher. On April 22, 1956, he married Beverly Jean Morrow in Burlington.

 

Lewis worked for the City of Burlington for ten years and then worked at the Fort Madison Correctional Facility for ten years.

 

He graduated from La Grange High School in La Grange, Missouri.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran.

 

Survivors include his wife, Beverly; three sons, Jerry Dale Schnellbacher of Oklahoma City, OK, Randall “Jay” Schnellbacher of Burlington, and Michael Ray Schnellbacher of Danville, IA; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Van Schnellbacher, and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jeffrey Dean Schnellbacher, and two sisters, Orena Jean Schnellbacher and Rita Jean Schnellbacher.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.

 

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Schnellbacher will be held at a later date in Riverview Cemetery, La Grange, Missouri.

Merwyn “Merv” Weinreich, 70, of Burlington, died at 3:16 PM Saturday, October 5, 2013, at his home.

 

Born September 18, 1943, in Burlington, he was the son of David and Janice Merideth Weinreich.  He married Connie Miller.

 

Merv worked for Price Chopper.  

 

He was a graduate of Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College.

 

He had a love for NASCAR and always enjoyed watching the race.  

 

Survivors include one daughter, Mindy Freeman of Kansas City, MO; one son, Matthew (Pam) Weinreich of Kansas City, MO; two grandchildren, Zach Weinreich and Amanda Weinreich; one brother, Kenneth (Judy) Weinreich of Burlington, and two nieces, Michele Willson and Shawna Weinreich.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.  

 

Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends.

 

The memorial service for Mr. Weinreich will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Kenneth R. Petersen officiating.  Burial will be at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery

 

A memorial has been established for mental illness.

Howard Frank Krasuski, 83, of Burlington, died at 8:10 AM Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born November 17, 1929, in Burlington, he was the son of Carl A. and Pauline F. Swozil Krasuski. On March 2, 1973, he married Dorothy M. Gawthrop in Burlington.

 

Howard worked as a Machinist and Tool Maker at Murray Iron Works for 43 years.

 

He was a 1947 graduate of Burlington High School.

 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War.

 

He was a member of the Blue Grass Association.  He loved hunting and fishing, especially duck hunting.  He also enjoyed mushroom hunting, bird watching, squirrel hunting, and Bluegrass festivals.

 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, two step-sons, Tim (Casey) Gawthrop of Fayetteville, AR, and Mike (Patty) Gawthrop of Burlington; seven step-grandchildren, Nicholas Gawthrop, Mike Gawthrop, Addison Gawthrop, Laura Talbott, Amanda Talbott, Ben Talbott, and Rachel Harper; seven step-great-grandchildren, one brother, Albert Krasuski of West Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Carl, one sister-in-law Ellen Krasuski, one sister Laura Russell and two step-granddaughters.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Krasuski will be 10:00 AM Friday, October 11, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Kenneth R. Petersen officiating.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established to the City Church of Burlington and Great River Hospice House.
