Obituaries Thursday October 24th

Darlene Angell Bentler, 81 years, of Houghton, Iowa died at 12:21 pmWednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa.  She was born January 1, 1932 at Hamilton, Illinois, a daughter of George Edward and Ina Isabel (Smith) Angell, Sr.  On August 7, 1951, she married Gervase W. Bentler in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fort Madison, Iowa.  They had eight children.  They divorced after 28 years.

 

Her family moved to Fort Madison, Iowa, where she was raised.  Before she married, she worked at Interstate Wholesale Lumber Company, in FortMadison. After staying home to raise her family, she later went to work at St. John’s Rectory, in Houghton, Iowa for 20 years.  She was a member of St. John’sChurch and St. John’s Altar and Rosary Society.  Her family was her life and she loved spending time with them whenever possible.  She loved books and reading, listening to music and watching TV.  She was an outstanding cook and earlier in her life she enjoyed decorating cakes.

 

She is survived by four sons: Jim (wife Diane) Bentler, of Rowlett, Texas; Dan (friend Steve) Bentler, of Kankakee, Illinois; Dave (friend Shannon) Bentler, of Charleston, South Carolina; Gregg (wife Carol) Bentler, of Iowa City, Iowa; two daughters: Julie Bentler (friend Nancy), of Morning Sun, Iowa; Lisa (husband Bob) Fitzsimmons, of Coralville, Iowa; one daughter-in-law: Michelle Bentler, of Farmington, Iowa; one sister: Jean (husband Hank) Grapperhaus, of Germantown, Illinois; grandchildren: Amy, Billy, Jonathan, Brooklyn, Kaitlyn, Brianna and Ashley; one great granddaughter: Kallie Rae and nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister: Sylvia Ann Angell, one brother: George Angell, Jr., two sons: Joseph and Michael, a daughter-in-law: Sandra (Mendez) Bentler, three granddaughters: Sheena, Shelby and Shayne Bentler and one nephew: Tom Grapperhaus.

 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 pmFriday, October 25, 2013 at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home, West Point, Iowa .  A Christian Wake Service will be held a 5:30 pm during the visitation at the funeral home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 amSaturday, October 26, 2013 at the St. John’sChurch, Houghton, Iowa, with Reverend Bruce DeRammelaere as Celebrant.  Private family burial will follow at the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Fort Madison, Iowa.  A memorial has been established, and contributions may be made at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.  Online condolences for the Bentler Family may be made at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home website, www.barr-holtkampfuneralhome.com.   Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
