Florence Miller, 73, of New London died Thursday, December 12, 2013 in the emergency room at HenryCountyHealthCenter.  Arrangements are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Charles Alvin Nelson, age 84, of Mediapolis, died Thursday morning, December 12, 2013, at the Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis.  The son of Russel and Evelyn Pilling Nelson, he was born on July 17, 1929 in rural Mediapolis.  He married Anne Hutchcroft on June 15, 1950 in Mediapolis.  She died February 6, 1978.  Charles married Marge Mellinger on August 15, 1980 in Mediapolis.

      He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1948 and from Iowa State University with an Ag Degree.  He taught Ag for two years at Redfield, Iowa where he established their first FFA Chapter.  He then came back to Mediapolis to farm with his dad on the family farm NE of Mediapolis. 

     Charlie was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis where he had served as an elder and Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir.  He was a Farm Bureau member and had served on the MediapolisSchool Board.  He enjoyed camping, the Cubs, Hawkeyes, and Cyclones.

     His family includes his wife Marge of Mediapolis; children, Brent & Chris Nelson of Gladstone, Illinois, Denise & Herschel Smuck of Mediapolis, Fred & Luann Nelson of Mediapolis; Duane & Jeanie Mellinger of Port Aransas, Texas, Dwight & Mary Mellinger of Burlington, and including a daughter –in-law, Leanne Nelson of Mediapolis; eleven grandchildren, Tracy & Scott Lipper, Deanne Walljasper, Jasper & Kristine Walljasper, Robyn Smuck, Eden & Garret Wahlers, Michele & Dan Evans, Joshua, Caleb, and Jacob Nelson, Russ & Alaina Nelson, and Sarah & KCasey Jackson; four great grandchildren, Leevi Walljasper, Bailey, Hailey, and Mack Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Anne; a son, Ed; and a sister, Fern Gustafson.

     The funeral ceremony for Charles Nelson will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 16, 2013, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Mediapolis.  Pastor Dan Baker will officiate.  Burial will follow at the KossuthCemetery.

     The family will meet friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.

     A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the First United Presbyterian Church and the FirstBaptistChurch both of Mediapolis.
