Obituaries Tuesday April 1st

Darlene Hoover, 79, of Burlington, died at 12:01 PM Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 9, 1934, in Fairfield, IA, she was the daughter of Randall W. and Frances Bailey Pickerel. On January 16, 1954, she married Gerald “Mike” Hoover in Lancaster, Missouri. He died on September 28, 1991.

Darlene worked for Blake Plumbing and Heating in Agency, IA, before working at the West Burlington Elementary School.  She later worked at the Galesburg Clinic and then for Dr. Chandra in Centralia, IL.  She retired from the Hawkeye Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Clinic after working there for 16 years.

She was a 1952 graduate of Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Missouri.

She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church, the Moose Lodge, the West Burlington Lions, the Silver Singers, Good Neighbors, RSVP, and a former member of the Circle Square B Promenaders.  She was a volunteer at Great River Hospital, delivered meals, and helped with the Blood Center mobile drives.  She enjoyed knitting, playing cards, singing, and especially spending time with her grandchildren, and watching their sporting events.

Survivors include one son, Ron (Cathy) Hoover of Gladstone, IL; two grandchildren, Travis (Lindsey) Hoover of Adel, IA, and Kyle (Caitlin) Hoover of Shakopee, MN; one great-grandchild, Haley Jo; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Randy, one sister, Colleen, and one great-granddaughter, Annie.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hoover will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Santiago officiating.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the service.  Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory following the service.  Burial will be at a later date.

Memorials have been established for West Burlington United Methodist Church and the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Burton D. Stern, 72 of Hamilton, Illinois died at 11:06 p.m. Wednesday March 26, 2014 in the Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk, Iowa. He was born August 16, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Samuel and Ida Atlas Stern.

Mr. Stern had lived in the Hamilton, Dallas City and Bowen areas for the past twenty years.

Survivors include one sister, Elaine Stern of Clarendon Hills, IL, one brother, Martin Stern of Fort Wayne, IN, one niece, Jennifer Stern and one nephew, Kevin Stern. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services, with military rites, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday April 4, 2014 at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Illinois. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the American Diabetes Association. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Dallas City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Doris Lorraine Muller, 74, of Carthage, IL passed away at 8:15 PM Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Montebello Health Care Center in Hamilton, IL.

She was born on June 4, 1939 in LaFarge, WI, the daughter of Albert and Rena Smith Rogers. On December 26, 1964 she married Dan Muller in Winona, MN.

Doris was a graduate of the LaFarge, WI High School. In 1964 she and her husband moved to Dallas City, IL. They resided there until moving to Carthage, ten years ago. Mrs. Muller worked for Sheaffer Pen Company in Ft. Madison, IA for 30 years. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, and baking. She also loved gardening and growing flowers, especially roses. Doris was a member of the Burnside Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Dan; one son, Corrie Muller of Dallas City; one daughter, Angie Cochran of Argyle, IA; two grandchildren, Daniel Joseph Fritzjunker of Burlington, IA and Gavin John Muller of Dallas City; one great-granddaughter, Autumn Marie Fritzjunker; two sisters, Lena Wallace of Gays Mills, WI and Marie Roberts of Readstown, WI.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers William and James Rogers, and one sister, Ida Ostrum.

A memorial service will be held at 8:00 PM, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, with Mark Nichols officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 6:00 until 8:00 PM., Saturday. Burial will be held later in Harris Cemetery near Dallas city. Mr. John D. Markey, 79, of rural Dallas City, IL passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 on his farm.
