FM Hires New City Manager; Looking for New Council Member

The City of Fort Madison has a new manager.

The City Council voted last(Tues) night to hire David Varley to succeed Byron Smith, who left several weeks ago for a new job in the state of Oregon. For the record, the City is still working on the details of Varley’s contract, but he’s scheduled to start work October 6th, a Monday.

In one other personnel matter last(Tues) night, the Council accepted the resignation of 5th Ward member Mark Lair, who will be moving to the 4th Ward. Any 5th Ward resident who’d like to try his or her hand at city governance til next January should submit a statement-of-intent by October 15th; the Council will be appointing someone.
