August John Lachman, 105, Burlington died Thursday 1/22/15 at Blair House Nursing and Rehab in Burlington.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 10AM Wednesday 1/28 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mary Beth Anderson, 67, of New London, died suddenly Sunday, January 25, 2015 at her daughter’s home in Johnston, Iowa.
The Celebration of Life for Mrs. Anderson will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, January 30, 2015 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Pastor Rod Cooper will officiate. According to her wishes, her body has been cremated. Visitation will be held at the Chapel after noon on Thursday, January 29, with the family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association.
Evelyn Margaret Davis, age 96 of Stronghurst passed away peacefully at 2:05 a.m. Sunday January 25, 2015 at the Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson, Iowa. She was born September 10, 1918 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of Fredereck and Esther Stack Kipp.
Mrs Davis was a nurse and nurse-educator for forty three years, teaching at Mercy and Burlington Hospital Schools of Nursing in Burlington, and Carl Sandburg Community College in Galesburg.
Mrs. Davis had two sons, William Hierstein of Auburn, Maine and Robert Hierstein (deceased). Also surviving are five grandchildren, Lisa (Scott) Eversmeyer, Robert (Lisa) Hierstein, Julie (Barry) Staats, Emily (Brian) Sparkle, Jessica (Brian) Michaud, eight great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was married to William Hierstein in 1941 and after his untimely death in 1946, she lived as a widow and raised her two sons. She supported her family by working as a staff nurse at Mercy Hospital in Fort Madison. In 1954, she moved to Iowa City, Iowa where she attended the University Of Iowa, earning a B.S. in nursing and public health in 1956.
Immediately after graduating from the University Of Iowa, she moved with her two sons to Quincy, Illinois, where she taught nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital School Of Nursing. Later, she taught at Mercy and Burlington Hospital Schools of Nursing, and then left for a career advancement at Carl Sandburg Community College, where she was Chair of the Nursing Program. She held that position for over twenty years, eventually retiring to Stronghurst.
She married Oscar Davis of Stronghurst in 1965. They were happily married for thirty eight years until Oscar’s death in 2003. Oscar was a fine man who loved Evelyn, her sons, and especially their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
While working at Carl Sandburg College, Evelyn earned a Master Of Arts Degree from Western Illinois University.
In later years, she suffered from dementia and was cared for at the Kensington in Fort Madison and later at the Donnellson Health Center. She was a member of the Stronghurst United Methodist Church.
The funeral service for Mrs. Davis will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday January 31, 2015 in the Stronghurst United Methodist Church with Pastor Karna Peterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Stronghurst Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Stronghurst Ambulance Service. Robert Lewis Reed, 87, of rural Lomax, IL passed away at 2:55 PM Sunday, January 25, 2015 at his home. He was born on January 15, 1928 in the Fountain Green township to Mervin and Ruth George Reed. On August 24, 1952 he married Martha Bennett at the LaHarpe Christian Church.
Robert attended the LaHarpe High School for two years, and then finished high school in Terre Haute, IL, graduating with the class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Bob Spent his entire life as a self-employed farmer and focused his efforts on the conservation of the soil and environment. He was a member of the Terre Haute Fire Department for 58 years, serving as Fire Chief for a majority of that time. He received accommodations and awards for his service as a volunteer. He was elected to the Terre Haute Township Road Commissioner for eight years. Bob was a member of the LaHarpe Christian Church and served in many capacities. He was a board member of the La Moine Christian Service Camp and participated in Promise Keepers events.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, one daughter, Sue Ellen Lay of Mascoutah, IL, one son, Scott (Nichole) Reed of LaHarpe, IL, two grandchildren, Allison and Zachary Lay of Mascoutah, IL and one great-grandchild, Isaac.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Jeffrey, step-father Otto Jones, one sister, Nellie Bennett, and one brother, George Reed.
Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the LaHarpe Christian Church with Nate McCarter officiating. Burial, with military rites will follow in the LaHarpe Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 PM Wednesday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
