Authorities Investigating Oil Spill Near Quad Cities

MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — Authorities investigating an oil spill in the Mississippi River say they haven’t yet determined the source of the leak.

Moline Fire Department Battalion Chief Todd Allen says firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a report of oil on the water’s surface in an area where two excursion boats are docked, on the south side of Arsenal Island. Upon arrival, fire officials confirmed a sheen on the water and a smell indicating that there had been a fuel spill upriver.

The Quad-City Times reports that the U.S. Coast Guard arrived about 4:30 p.m. to help emergency crews locate the source of the spill.

Greg Swanson, Moline’s utilities general manager, says the location of the spill near the city’s water plant may require testing for water quality and safety.
