Wilma Dot Hazell, 97, of Burlington, died at 9:36 AM Wednesday, August 5, 2015, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born May 27, 1918, in Mexico, MO, she was the daughter of Harry Krutcher and Henrietta White Reed. On July 15, 1936, she married Arthur Franklin Hazell in Morrison, IL. He died September 23, 1987.
In the mid 60’s, Dot went to work with her husband at Hazell Agencies where she quickly became the lead real estate sales person in the office. She continued with this into the 1970’s. Dot and her husband retired in 1979 and moved to Cherokee Village, AR. Shortly after Art’s death in 1987, Dot returned to Burlington.
She was a 1936 graduate of Burlington High School.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and it’s Sarah Circle, Eastern Star, King’s Daughters, P.E.O. Chapter NH, and the Burlington Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She had a passion for drawing and enjoyed social events, dancing, music, flowers, playing bridge, and golfing. She hit a hole-in-one on her very first swing of the club.
Survivors include three sons, Arthur Michael (Joan) Hazell of Coralville, Patrick James (Pam) Hazell of Washington, and Jonathan Scott (Cathy) Hazell of Burlington; 15 grandchildren, Jim (June Boughton) Hazell, Michelle Hazell, Lisa (Reid Frey) Schreiner, Robert (Jill) Hazell, William Plock, Jonathan (Amy) Hazell, David (Dawn) Hazell, Aira (Craig) Harris, Tasha (Monte) Hazell-Miller, Sarah Hazell, Theresa (Adam) Thielen, Tony (Kayla Pierschbacher) Hazell, Katie (Mike) Denehy, Sean (Laura Miller) Hazell, Molly Hazell; 23 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Kaley, Macy, Zachary, Noah, Riley, Daisy, Lucinda “Lucy”, Livi, Jon-Luc, Cayleigh, Charissa, Cameron, Laura, Miranda, Caite, Hannah, Julian, Julia, Claire, Paul, Jude, Noah; four great-great grandchildren, Quincy, Priya, Alona, Aydriah; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Reed Hazell, one grandson Michael Dennis Hazell, one brother, and one sister.
Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, August 7, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.
The funeral service for Mrs. Hazell will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 8, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Rigdon officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials has been established for First United Methodist Church.

Alvin Howard ‘Al’ Crooks, age 88, of Letts, died Wednesday morning, August 5, 2015, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. The son of Howard and Ruth Ann Dickinson Crooks, he was born on December 4, 1926 in Sumner, Iowa. Al married Anna M. Young on August 23, 1953 in Wapello.
He graduated from Nashua High School in 1945. Alvin served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He farmed for a few years and then did farm tiling and backhoe work for many years followed by repairing small engines and hydraulic jacks. He enjoyed working and especially enjoyed restoring antique tractors.
His family includes his wife, Anna; five daughters, Marie Blanchard of Muscatine, Karen & Dennis Steinke of Muscatine, Sue Crooks of Walcott, Judy Crooks of Wapello, and Linda & David Arnold of Wapello; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; and a sister, Iva Meany of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, a sister, and a brother.
The funeral ceremony for Alvin Crooks will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with Rev. Marsha Gerot officiating. Burial will follow at the Grandview Cemetery. The family will gather and meet friends from 1:30 to 2:30 PM prior to the funeral on Saturday.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Letts United Methodist Church and the Mercy Hospice of Iowa City.

William Ingman “Bill” Hoffman, 92, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Burlington Care Center, Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday, August 4, 2015.
Born on February 13, 1923 in Palo, Iowa, he was the son of William L. and Neva Sebeibert Hoffman. He married Noma Crippen on November 1, 1944 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
Bill served in the US Air Corps. He trained in Texas and was a B-29 Flight Engineer. He also had his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying as well. Bill enjoyed his career as a Sales Rep for Caterpillar Commercial Equipment for 40 years. He enjoyed trap shooting and won many trophies with his shooting ability. Bill rode and showed horses with his daughter, Suzy the 1978 Ft. Madison rodeo queen. His favorite calf roping and reining horse was “Smutty Dawson”. He found many hours of enjoyment with his homemade houseboat powered by his favorite engine, the Cat Diesel. Bill also traveled quite a bit in his motor home, also powered by a Cat Diesel. He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Noma; his daughter, Susan (James J. Jr.) Beriault of Burlington, Iowa; one sister, Nancy Ridenour of Iowa City, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Tamatha Hoffman Carper, Melissa M. Beriault and Natalie A. Beriault; 1 great-grandchild, Jaron Carper; 8 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Daniel M. Hoffman; and one infant sister.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Friday, August 7, 2015 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Prugh’s Chapel which will be concluded by Military Rites that will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Private Interment will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, North Liberty, Iowa at a later date. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines Co. Humane Society. Patricia M. Johnson, 88, Mount Pleasant, died Tuesday 8/4 at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.
She is survived by 4 sons, Harrry of Mount Pleasant, Terry of Baring, MO & Wayne and Gary of Danville, a daughter, Sharon Cornwell of Winfield, a brother Gary Schaefer of Alabama.
Memorial Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM on Friday 8/7 at Lunning Chapel with burial in the Prairie Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends following Moose Rites at 6 PM until 8 PM Thursday 8/6 at Lunnings.
