Made Just for His Kids, Prof’s Card Game is Now Taking Off

BOSTON (AP) — A card game that a Boston College professor made for his kids is now catching on around the world.

Darren Kisgen came up with the game after finding that most fantasy games were too complex or violent for his young children. Called Dragonwood, the game borrows ideas from poker and rummy but blends them into a fantasy world of goblins, dragons and ogres. It’s advertised for players 8 years old and up.

After playing it with ordinary playing cards and dice, Kisgen sent the idea to a game publisher, which provided colorfully illustrated cards and began selling the game earlier this year.

Since summer, the game has already sold more than 20,000 copies, and it won a top gaming award from Mensa, the society for people with high IQs.
