Obituaries Thursday April 14th

James Thomas Hingst, 81, of Burlington, IA died at 8:45 PM Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

 

Born December 22, 1934, in Burlington, IA he was the son of John Albert Jr. and Helen Loretta Brown Hingst. On October 1, 1955, he married Janet R. Haas in Fort Madison.

 

Jim worked for Champion Spark Plug for 32 years.  He retired in 1991.  He then worked at Hy-Vee in floral and delivery for 21 years.

 

He graduated in 1954 from Burlington High School and attended Burlington Junior College.

 

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War from 1955 until 1958, with the 98th Air Fueling Squad in Lincoln, NE and in England, Newfoundland, and the Azores.  He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.

 

He was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. He was a charter member of U.A.W. Local #1237 and charter member of Three I Credit Union.  He was a diehard University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Los Angeles Dodgers fan.  He loved gardening and ceramics.

 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Janet; one daughter, Nannette Marie (Clark) Griffin of Fort Madison; one son, Thomas (Tammie) Hingst of Avon, IN; one granddaughter, Caitlin and two grandsons, John and Joseph; three step-grandchildren, Michael, Sara and Matthew; one brother, Richard (Patricia) Hingst of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM Sunday, April 17, 2016, at  Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory in Burlington.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Hingst will be 10:00 AM Monday, April 18, 2016, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory following burial.

 

A memorial has been established for the Mississippi Valley Veteran’s Memorial.
