Obituaries Friday April 15th

Kenneth Neal Hartman, 93, of Burlington, died at 6:10 PM Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born April 15, 1922, in Burlington, he was the son of Jesse Herbert and LaVerna Margaret Whitaker Hartman. On September 6, 1947, he married Ruth Catherine Reusch in Burlington.  She died January 20, 2011.

 

Kenny worked at the Iowa Ordinance Plant.  Along with his wife, he owned and operated Ken’s Korner Grocery, worked at Coast to Coast/True Value Hardware and Rolling Rock Ranch selling horse trailers and boarding horses and vehicle storage.

 

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II on the U.S.S. Baltimore serving six months in the Atlantic and 2 1/2 years in the Pacific.  President Roosevelt was on his ship during his tour of the Pacific.

 

He was a member of SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.  He was a past member of Moose Lodge #579, Knights of Columbus #568, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, Des Moines County Riding Club, and Black Hawk Auto Restorers.  He loved horses, horse shows and classic cars.  He enjoyed attending theTri-State Rodeo and helped at the Special Kids Rodeo.

 

Survivors include one daughter, Lala (Hartman) O’Hara of Burlington; two sons, Neal Thomas Hartman of Burlington, and Larry (Krista) Hartman of Burlington; one grandson, Nickolas Webber Hartman; several nieces and nephews; and a grafted in daughter, Sally Lackey of Centralia, IL.

 

Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

 

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2016, at  Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home & Crematory.

 

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Hartman will be 9:30 AM Saturday, April 16, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant and Rev. Father Bill Roush as the Con-celebrant and full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John’s cafeteria following the service.  Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

 

Memorials have been established for the Great River Hospice House and the Special Kids Rodeo.
