“We have won the Big Muddy Cup again, it’s a great time to be a Burlingtonian,” McCampbell said as he opened the award presentation, exclaiming “This is very exciting news to be delivering to you all today, let it soak in, let’s enjoy this!”
The ‘Big Muddy Cup’ is awarded by Site Selection Magazine, and ranks all towns along the Mississippi River. The magazines editor, Adam Bruns, says that they track projects that have at least a million dollars invested, create at least 20 new jobs, or 20,000 square feet of space. Burlington won the award based on a number of recent industrial projects that have had an impact on the area.

Bruns spoke of the positive things going on in the community and said that this award is not easily earned.
“I commend you, for once again earning this. This is not something we have bestowed, this is something every one of you has earned. And good luck for next year, as we keep keeping track,” Bruns said prior to handing the trophy over to Burlington Mayor Shane McCampbell.
Burlington was in competition with every other town along the Mississippi River, including Minneapolis, St. Louis, The Quad Cities, and New Orleans. Other Iowa communities to make the top 10 included Muscatine, Clinton, and Dubuque.
Bruns said at the presentation ceremony that this is the first time in several years that a community has won the award back-to-back.
