Obituaries Tuesday April 18th

Paul Eugene Spiker, 87, of Burlington, died at 9:30 PM Saturday, April 15, 2017, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

 

Born July 2, 1929, in Burlington, he was the son of Forrest and Ruth Fielty Spiker. Paul was married to Geraldine Dopler and later divorced.

 

Paul attended classes in the Burlington School System. He did not graduate but went back and got his G.E.D.

 

He was in the Army from March 27, 1951 to March 27, 1953. After basic training in Indiana, he was sent to Germany where he was in the “Tank Corp”, first as a gunner, then as a driver. He was discharged as a Sergeant. Paul said he never had to pull “KP” duty.

 

Paul worked for Iowa Southern Utilities from 1947 until 1963. He also worked for 30 years at the Burlington Case Company.

 

He enjoyed golfing and fishing. He used to deer hunt a lot in Missouri but decided he just didn’t like killing them anymore. He liked making eagle sculptures from wood and plastic.  Paul was a past member of the Moose and Eagles Clubs.  He was a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club.  He loved animals, especially all his dogs, cats and birds he took care of over the years.

 

Survivors include his three sons, Michael Paul (Ann Marie) Spiker of Woodstock, GA, twins, Ronnie James (Judy) Spiker of Burlington, Randy Forrest (Nora) Spiker of Burlington; one daughter, Susan (Brett) Flake of Gladstone, IL; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, three half-brothers, Richard, Warren, and Zachary Kuster, and one half-sister Elsie Kuntz.

 

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, April 21, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the visitation

 

A memorial has been established for the P.A.W. Animal Shelter in Ft. Madison.

Mrs. Edna Belle Koger, 91, of Burlington died at 6:01 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Great River Medical Center.

Born November 14, 1925 in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of William Jackson Lincoln and Rachael Elizabeth (Keller) Lincoln Thie.  On July 5, 1943 she married Claud Koger in Burlington.  He preceded her in death on August 1, 1995.

Edna moved with her family to Burlington at the age of 5.  She was a warehouse clerk at Winegard for over 26 years, retiring in 1988.  In her retirement she worked part time at Wendy’s as a dining room person.

She enjoyed the river, was an avid reader and loved her cats.  She was a loving and very patient lady.

Edna was a member of First Christian Church – Disciples of Christ and was very active in Christian Women’s Fellowship.  She also served as a deaconate.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Magdefrau of Springdale, Arkansas and Norma Thye of Burlington; two sons, Larry Koger of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Clancy Koger of Springdale, Arkansas; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister, Della Laue of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, her parents, step-father, and brother.

The funeral service for Mrs. Koger will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18th at First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ.  Revs. David Yonker and Will Ryan will officiate.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 17th in Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Mrs. Rachel “Betty” McWhortor, 91, of Burlington died at 2:12 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2017, at Danville Care Center.

Born June 8, 1925 in Quincy, Illinois, she was the daughter of James Arthur and Frances May (Smith) Cummings.  She married Mason Cary, they later divorced.  On May 2, 1959 she married Craig E. McWhortor at Kahoka Methodist Church in Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on September 12, 2003.

Mrs. McWhorter was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed ceramics.  After her retirement she and Craig enjoyed working at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO for several years.

Survivors include one son, James M. (Chris) Cary of Danville; three grandchildren, Brad (Amy) Cary, Todd (Debbie) Cary and Suzanne (Tobias) Lunsford; six great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Liz Eichor and Anna Alderson; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister.

A private family funeral service and interment for Mrs. McWhortor will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Lunning Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
