Obituaries Saturday December 23rd

Dr. Paul Breckner, 92, of Burlington, died 4:25 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born August 1, 1925 in Agnethlen, Romania, he was the son of Hermann and Melitta (Spreer) Breckner. He married Theresia (Isa) Zupancic on May 10, 1949 in Graz, Austria. She died January 31, 1997. He married Donna Bonar on January 19, 2002.

Dr. Breckner was a physician in general practice for 40 years, graduating from Karl-Franzens-Universität in Graz, Austria in February 1956. He worked in Mason City, Iowa; Chicago, Illinois and Dixon, Illinois, before starting a private practice in Plymouth, Illinois in 1959. In 1967, he moved to Burlington and practiced with Dr. George Gundrum until retiring in 1992. Paul continued to work part time at Health West Clinic and IAAP until full retirement in 1997.

He was a 35-year member of the Iowa Medical Society, a member of the Academy of Family Physicians, and on the medical staff of Burlington Medical Center for over 35 years. Paul also served terms as President of the Des Moines County Medical Society and chief of staff at Burlington Medical Center.

In addition to his passion for medicine and the care of his patients, Paul loved working in his yard and tinkering around the house, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Bonar of Burlington; two daughters, Eva (David) Adams of Boston, MA and Andrea Breckner of Minneapolis, MN; two sons, Paul Breckner of St. Louis, MO and Christopher (Lu Anne) Breckner of Coralville, IA; four grandchildren, Meredith Breckner, Timothy Adams, Abigail Breckner and Elizabeth Adams; one sister, Hannemarie Mathes of Germany; sister in-law Sue (Steve) Nelson of West Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and brother, Reinhardt.

Visitation is December 27, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm at Lunning Chapel, Burlington, with service on December 28, 2017 at 11 am at Lunning Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Great River Hospice, 1306 S. Washington Road, West Burlington, IA 52655.

Mark Louis Bannier, 71, of Burlington, died at 6:35 PM Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 30, 1946, he was the son of Louis and Janet Holsteen Bannier. On October 20, 1974, he married Joanne Hildebrand in Duluth, MN.

He was the owner and operator of the M.J. and L. Window Cleaning Business.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.

He was a Pastor of Grace Community International Church. He loved to read, square dance, and go to garage sales. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He enjoyed giving to his church family with his gift of communication.

Survivors include his wife, Josie; his son, Lyle Bannier of Burlington; two sisters, JoAnn (Steve) Hinkle of Wayland, IA, and Jean (Bob) Ritzman of Yarmouth, IA; one brother, William (Sandie) Bannier of West Burlington; several nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. Bannier will be 11:00 AM Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with his nephew Pastor Bill Ritzman officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home following the service.

Memorials have been established for the Hope Lodge in Boston, MA, an affiliate of the American Cancer Society.
