Southeastern Community College will add soccer to its Blackhawk Athletics lineup in August.
The college has begun to take the first steps to build the school’s first women’s and men’s soccer teams, headed by recently hired coach Zachary Newton.

The first year will be geared toward laying a foundation for the team that values hard work and building the team’s identity.
“It would be nice to win a few games,” said Newton. “but, ideally, because we’ve got a brand new squad, it’s more (about) trying to get these 25 strangers to mix together and become a unit, to become a team, and just become one body rather than just a team of individuals.”
As he builds the soccer team, Newton intends to ensure that the athletes value academics.
“I can help these kids succeed here academically and athletically,” he said. “I’m definitely going to push that academics goes with athletics here in terms of trying to get recruited to four-year schools.”
The Blackhawks will split their home games between Bracewell Stadium and the Burlington Area RecPlex.
