The historic Tama Building in downtown Burlington burns on 8/5/18
A historic downtown Burlington building has been ravaged by an overnight fire.
Firefighters were called to the Tama Building around 11:30 Saturday night. The building was fully engulfed by flames and a woman was reportedly trapped on the third floor, but was rescued from the fire without serious injuries. There is no official word as to why she was in the building.
Fire departments from across the region have been called to assist, including Mt. Pleasant, Fort Madison, Danville, New London, and Mediapolis.
There is no word on damage yet, however the building appears to be a total loss, as at least one exterior wall has partially collapsed, scanner traffic indicated multiple floors inside had collapsed, and the entire roof appears to have been destroyed. Live power lines collapsed near the building and were on the ground at around 3:30 am, Alliant Energy was called to the scene to disconnect them.
The Tama Building was in the final stages of an ongoing renovation after a previous fire in the building in 2010. Millions of dollars have been invested into the project, and the building was set to open to tenants within the next few months. There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
This is a developing situation, more details will be reported as they are available.
