The City of Fort Madison has approved a new ordinance to ban all but the lowest class of fireworks within the city limits.
Following the July Fourth Holiday, the city council of Fort Madison had a number of citizens ask the council to ban the use of fireworks within the city limits. Many people talked about the loud noise causing people with health issues and animals distress. The council told the residents that they would, in fact, consider an ordinance since fireworks are now legal in the state.
Monday night the council discussed the possible options and then began to reach a consensus on a ban of most fireworks within the city limits, other than the lowest class of fireworks and those approved by the fire chief and given a permit. The fine for use of fireworks within the city could be as much as $500 and the police would confiscate any fireworks int he possession of an individual found to be in violation of the ordinance. The lowest class of fireworks are permitted for use of private property. Those would include items such as sparklers and the snakes.
The council plans to approve the final wording of the ordinance at the next regular meeting.
