Obituaries for Thursday November 8th

Donald Leight, 86, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at his home.

Born April 30, 1932, in Le Claire, IA, he was the son of Clarence and Lorine Chandler Leight. On July 31, 2004, he married Marilyn Fullner in Keokuk.

He retired from Case Co. in Bettendorf after 30 years working as a tool and die maker.

Donald was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from December 11, 1952 until December 10, 1954.

He attended First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball and softball, bowling, playing cards, shooting pool and dancing.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of West Burlington; two daughters, Donita (Ken) Winkelmann of Lebanon, MO and Debbie Quigley (Charles Womack) of West Point; two step-sons, Murray (Lynette) Fullner of Memphis, TN and Merrit Fullner of Burlington; three grandsons, Taylor (Amy) Winkelmann of Brimfield, IL, Travis Winkelmann of Fort Dodge, and Corey (Megan) Clements of Davenport; two step-grandsons, Nathan Fullner and Corey Fullner both of Memphis, TN; three granddaughters, Janel (Leroy) Kent of Charleston, IA, Jennifer McVey of Cedar Rapids, and Cristy McVey of Cedar Rapids; two step-granddaughters, Kala Fullner of Memphis, TN and Jennifer (Cole) Williams of Jackson, MS; and seven great-grandchildren: Brittany, Riley, Cade, Avery, Cohen, Cossette, and Fritz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Linda Mosher and Aldine Jones; two brothers, Richard C. Leight and Keith Allen Leight; step-son, Daniel Clements; step-daughter, Diane McVey; granddaughter, Jaimie Quigley; and great-grandson, Dawson Nye.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The memorial service for Donald will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 17, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Debra L. Kinney officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held at First Presbyterian Church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for P.A.W. Animal Shelter in Fort Madison, Great River Hospice, and the Steamboat Senior Center.

David H. Chubb, 89, of Burlington died Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at Burlington Care Center.

Born February 26, 1929 in Burlington, he was the son of Jacob and Hilma (Hoglund) Chubb. He married Bess Dalrymple on April 20, 1952, she died November 17, 2005.

David was an Army veteran. He worked as a photographer for National Studio and continued on as a photographer for J.I. Case for 30 years. After his retirement he worked as a draftsman for Great River Medical Center.

He was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church, Eagles Aerie #150, Moose Lodge #527, Des Moines Masonic Lodge AF&AM #1, Shriner’s, American Legion, VFW, the Jazz Club and a former member of Carthage Lake Club.

He loved to golf, and earned 6 hole-in-one’s! He enjoyed bowling, archery, target shooting, coin and stamp collecting and was a musician. He treasured his time wintering in the South in Gulfport, MS.

Survivors include his special cat Mz. Chubb; three children, Valerie (Steve) Bohlen of Ames, IA, Jan Chubb-Parris of Burlington and Ken (Pat) Chubb of Gardner, KS; seven grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; companion, Mary Lou Kitterman of Burlington; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter in infancy, son-in-law Steve Parris and one brother James Chubb.

The funeral service for Mr. Chubb will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 9th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David Bracht-Wagner will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Masonic Rite will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 8th at Lunning Chapel followed by visitation with the family present until 8:00 p.m.

James L. Wensel, age 82 of Carman, Illinois, passed away at 7:06 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at his home. He was born February 3, 1936 in Spickard, Missouri, the son of William and Wilda Elliot Wensel. He was married to Shirley Madison. They later divorced. On July 11, 2007, he married Marjory Beasley. She survives.
Mr. Wensel lived in Carman since 1965. Prior to that he lived in the Central City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa area and worked for Blahnik Construction for many years. He served from 1956 – 1958 in the United States Army, stationed in Okinawa. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #38 and Laborers Local #43, both in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of, and former Commander of, the AMVETS Post #37 in Central City, Iowa.
James was an avid fisherman, and always donated his catch to the local church or AMVET organization. He loved restoring and repairing guns. He was well known in the Carman area for his beautiful yard, and when able, he assisted in the care of the Carman United Methodist Church grounds.
Survivors include his wife, Marjory, two sons, Richard Wensel and Jay Wensel, both of Cedar Rapids, two daughters, Nancy Wensel of Cedar Rapids, Melissa Wensel of Seattle, WA, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters, Judy Valasky of Madison, WI, Sherry Wagner of Minneapolis, MN and one brother, Jonathan Gabriel of Duluth, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Twylla Thomas, and one brother in law, Bill Wagner.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday November 9, 2018 in the Carman United Methodist Church, with Pastor Lisa Unger officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Carman Cemetery. Banks & Beals Funeral Home of Stronghurst is in charge of arrangements. Wendell Verne Williams, 95, of Danville, died Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

The funeral service for Wendell Williams will be 10:00 am Friday at Harmony Bible Church with Pastor Nathan Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, rural Danville. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, at Elliott Chapel with the family present to greet friends from 5 – 7 PM.

A memorial has been established for Harmony Bible Church Mission Fund.
