Obituaries Saturday March 16th

Spencer Honsey, 89, of Burlington, died at 6:45 PM Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born January 5, 1930, in Lake Mills, IA, he was the son of Selmer Oliver and Ingeborg Theoline Knutson Honsey. On August 3, 1952, he married Lorraine Olena Gesme in Minnesota. Lorraine passed away in 1995. On June 29, 1996, he married Mary Evelyn Mahoney in Burlington.

Spencer was the owner of Spencer’s Service Station.

He graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1947.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War from November of 1951 until 1953 as a CPL in the 40th Infantry.

Spencer was a member, council member and treasurer of Bethany Lutheran Church; he was also a member of F.O.E. #150 and American Legion. He was a board member for Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County for 52 years. He loved spending time with family and friends and had a passion for collecting Petroleum memorabilia.

Survivors include wife, Mary Evelyn Honsey of Burlington, two sons, Scott (Julie) Honsey of Des Moines and Jon (Sue) Honsey of Davenport; two daughters, Susan (Bob) Lagneaux of Polk City and Carolyn (Ron) Phillips of Burlington; one step-son, John (Melinda) Fuller of Maryland Heights, MO; two step-daughters, Candice (Dale) Travis of Maryland Heights, MO and Jana (Kyle) Morgan of West Des Moines; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harris (LeAnn) Honsey of Lake Mills, IA; three sisters, Dolores Fredericks of Scottsdale, AZ, Mayvis Johnson of North Wood, IA and Beverly (Maynard) Bidne of Emmons, MN; one sister-in-law, Berdine Honsey.

Besides his parents, Spencer was preceded in death by his first wife, one daughter, Christine Honsey, two brothers, Clinton and Homer, and two sisters, Palma Bendickson and Stella Larson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, March 18, 2019 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The memorial service for Spencer will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Hermansen officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard at Bethany Lutheran Church. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church following the military honors. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County and Lime Creek Cemetery Association of Emmons, MN.
