Burlington, Ia (The Hawk Eye)-  The Hawk Eye reports that Burlington police are investigating a shooting that happened early Sunday on the Great River Bridge.

According to Lt. Adam Schaefer of the Burlington Police Department, the department became aware of the shooting early Sunday after a 26-year-old woman presented herself to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington with a gunshot wound.

It is believed that an altercation began in Gulfport, Illinois, and those involved traveled over the Great River Bridge. Police are not sure whether the shooting happened in Illinois or Iowa, as the bridge is split between the two states.

The Illinois State Patrol is assisting the BPD in the investigation until it can be determined which side of the bridge the shooting took place.

The victim was airlifted from GRMC to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Schaefer said that the victim was still in the hospital as of Thursday afternoon.

Schaefer refused to release information about possible suspects.

This shooting marks the 12th confirmed shooting in the Burlington Area since June 23.
